Conference highlights student-athletes from last 25 years

Mike Harmon '15 won 18 conference titles in the pool.
LANCASTER, Pa. – Gettysburg College was represented by six former student-athletes on the Centennial Conference Silver Anniversary Men's Swimming Team released on Wednesday.

The Centennial Conference is celebrating 25 years as one of the elite small college athletic conferences in the country with the announcement of its Silver Anniversary teams, highlighting the best of the best over our first quarter-century.

The six former student-athletes from Gettysburg to make the squad were Justin Fanslau '05, Adam Taft '11, Matt Libby '12, Jason Potter '15, Mike Harmon '15, and Ty Dougherty '18.

For inclusion on a Silver Anniversary team, a student must have a degree from one of the Conference institutions and met one of the following qualifications:

•       3-time or 4-time first-team All-Centennial performer
•       2-time Centennial Conference Player of the Year
•       1st team All-America AND 2-time first-team All-Centennial performer
•       2-time All-America (1st, 2nd or 3rd team)

For individual sports such as swimming and track and field, the accomplishments must have occurred in the same event.

Fanslau was the CC Outstanding Performer in 2005 after claiming individual titles in the 100 free and 200 free. He was a three-time champ in the 100 free, while also adding a title in the 50 free as a junior. Fanslau added five more conference titles as a member of relay teams and guided the Bullets to the league championship in 2003.

Taft was a three-time CC champ in the 200 back, winning the event in 2008, 2009, and 2011. He also steered the 800 free relay to a victory in 2011. As a senior, Taft helped Gettysburg reclaim the Centennial crown after an eight-year drought. He finished his career with the third-fastest and second-fastest times in the 100 back and 200 back, respectively, in program history.

Libby captured 14 conference titles during his tenure, including six individual crowns. He won the 100 free in each of his final three Centennial meets and touched the wall first in the 200 free in both 2011 and 2012. As a senior, Libby guided the Bullets to three All-America performances in the freestyle relays, marking the program's first national awards in 14 years. He also led Gettysburg to back-to-back conference titles in 2011 and 2012 and finished his career holding a total of seven school records.

Potter won a total of 20 individual and relay titles at the CC Championship. He swept the 100 and 200 free races in each of his final three conference meets, and added the 50 free title in 2015. With 18 All-America certificates, Potter ranks as the program's most decorated male swimmer at the national level. Six of his national awards came in individual races, including a runner-up showing in the 50 free in 2015, tying the best national finish ever by a Gettysburg men's swimmer. Potter led Gettysburg to four consecutive conference titles and finished his career holding seven of the program's top times, including the 50 free (19.93) and 100 free (44.03).

While Potter dominated in the freestyle events, Harmon was equally as dominant in the backstroke and individual medley races. He won 18 total CC championships, including three in both the 200 IM and the 200 back. Harmon secured individual national status in the 200 back in 2013 and was a part of 10 All-American relays, including the 200 free relay which placed runner-up in 2015. He finished as the program record holder in seven events, including the 100 back (50.00), 200 back (1:48.91), and 200 IM (1:51.16).

Dougherty followed on the heels of Potter and Harmon to establish his own legacy at Gettysburg. The CC Rookie of the Year in 2015, he was the program's first two-time CC Outstanding Performer (2016, 2018) and won a total of 18 conference titles. Dougherty swept the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 breaststroke in each of his final appearances at the CC Championship. On the national stage, Dougherty teamed up with the aforementioned swimmers to win All-America honors as a member of four relays before going on to capture national status in four individual events later in his career. He led Gettysburg to three conference team championships and closed his career with five program records, including the top time in the 100 breaststroke (55.64).
