Men’s Lacrosse Participates in Fish For A Cure, Mustache Madness

Gettysburg raises $5,676 for Fish For A Cure and over $4,900 for HEADstrong Foundation

Gettysburg, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team has been putting in the work off the field by raising awareness and money for two organizations – Fish For A Cure and the HEADstrong Foundation Lacrosse Mustache Madness.

Senior PJ Dettor (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) has been participating in Fish For A Cure since 2015. His father helped start the organization in 2007, along with a group of friends to raise money for the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center after one of the group member's wives recovered from cancer there. After two successful years of raising $33,000 for Sloan Kettering, the group decided to make the tournament benefit a local charity, the Anne Arundel Medical Center's Geaton and JoAnn DeCesaris Cancer Institute.

Back on November 7, Dettor along with his classmates Kevin Casey (Marblehead, Mass./St. John's Prep), Nick Cooper (Glen Gardner, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's), Pat Cosgrove (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), Jack Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School), Andrew Horn (Bronxville, N.Y./Avon Old Farms), Connor Leach (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy), and Colin Pavluk (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson Fair Haven), participated in the Paul C. Dettor Captain's Challenge and the charitable fishing tournament. The crew sailed out on the Chesapeake Bay with the hopes of catching the biggest fish while trying to raise a goal of $5,000. They exceeded their goal by raising $5,676.

Through the Paul C. Dettor Captain's Challenge event and the added support of AAMC, the tournament has donated more than $3.4 million to AAMC since 2010. The organization is looking to continue its growth and raise as much money as possible to help support those going through a cancer diagnosis.

Even though the annual event has happened already, you can still donate to the organization here.

From October 19 until November 28, the Bullets are participating in the HEADstrong Foundation Lacrosse Mustache Madness initiative, which is an online fundraising campaign to help support families overcome by cancer.

"The Headstrong Foundation has made great efforts in the lacrosse community regarding individuals and families affected by cancer," said Pavluk, who is heading it up for the men's lacrosse team. "I think we have a great platform to raise awareness and funds by spreading the word to friends and family members. We are growing our mustaches out to show support for this cause and to continue to spread awareness for families impacted by cancer during the highest risk of COVID-19."

For the second year in a row, the Bullets have participated in the HEADstrong Foundation campaign. As of today, the team has raised $4,967 and is quickly closing in on its goal of $5,000.

As an organization, the HEADstrong Foundation's fundraising goal is $400,000. To date, they have raised $389,958 with contributions coming from men's lacrosse teams from all across NCAA Divisions.
