THE LEADERS
•
Akim Joseph (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Notre Dame Fairfield [Conn.]) led the Bullets with 16 points, including five in overtime to fuel the victory.
•
Antonello Baggi (Cremona, Italy/West Deptford [N.J.]) led the offense with 18 points.
•
Elijah Williams (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends) added 17 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the year.
FOR THE FOES
• Ryan Hughes led all scorers with 24 points for the Bears.
• Cole Grubbs added 12 points and 12 rebounds.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• The teams traded points early on before back-to-back
Ryan McKeon (Landenberg, Pa./Sanford [Del.]) layups gave Gettysburg a 12-7 lead with 16:36 to play in the opening half. After four ties and seven lead changes over the next eight minutes, Ursinus held a 30-29 edge when
Jordan Stafford (Galloway, N.J./Saint Joseph Hammonton) hit the second of two free throws with 8:29 on the clock. Cole Grubbs responded with two free throws 20 seconds later, starting a 15-3 run that opened up a 45-32 lead with 1:43 showing. After an
Akim Joseph layup cut the deficit to 11, Grubbs and Joseph traded single free throws in the final minute of the stanza to make it a 46-35 game at the break.
• The Bear lead swelled to 55-40 in the first seven minutes of the second half before a pair of McKeon buckets made it an 11-point game with 13:18 remaining. Ursinus pushed the lead back to 60-48 on a Ryan Hughes trey with 9:35 to play but
Elijah Williams answered at the other end with a 3-pointer of his own. An
Antonello Baggi dunk and
Carl Schaller (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) layup closed the margin to five and forced a timeout with 7:19 showing. Trailing 62-57, Baggi knocked down another triple to make it a two-point game with 6:01 remaining.
• Another Baggi wing 3-pointer with 4:25 on the clock made it 66-65 before Williams gave the Bullets a one-point lead with 2:47 showing, hitting a turnaround at the free-throw line with the shot clock winding down. Hughes responded with a floater at the other end and then hit the first of two free throws with 9.9 seconds remaining for a 69-67 lead. Schaller, however, took the inbounds and drove the length of the court, hitting the game-tying layup with 3.8 seconds on the clock to force overtime.
• Baggi hit a jumper 70 seconds into overtime to put Gettysburg in front before Hughes and McKeon traded free throws for a 73-71 Bullets lead with 3:22 on the clock. Hughes then converted a three-point play for a one-point lead 20 seconds later but Joseph canned a step-back 3-pointer for a two-point lead. Hughes once again responded but
Max Pernetti (Oakland, N.J./Ramapo) hit just his second jumper of the game for a 78-76 lead with 1:09 showing. Hughes made the second of two free throws with 53 ticks remaining to make it a one-point game. The defense forced Ursinus into a contested midrange jumper and Joseph secured the rebound before calmly sinking both ends of the 1-and-1 with 2.6 seconds on the clock for a three-point lead and the defense didn't allow the Bears to even get a look at a potential game-tying attempt.
