THE SKINNY STORY
In the Gettysburg Tip-off Tournament Consolation game, Gettysburg and Messiah fought to a two-possession game before the break, but after a 49-all tie in the second half Gettysburg wouldn't allow the Falcons any closer than three points the rest of the way, stretching their lead to a 77-57 final.
THE LEADERS
•
Jordan Stafford (Galloway, N.J./Saint Joseph Hammonton) led all scorers with 21 points to go with eight rebounds.
•
Carl Schaller (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) contributed 14 points and went 6-for-6 at the foul line.
•
Antonello Baggi (Cremona, Italy/West Deptford, [N.J.]) put up 11 points as the final Bullet to score more than ten on the day.
FOR THE FOES
• Cole Fisher led the Falcons with 15 points.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Dylan Cuperus and
Carl Schaller traded 3-pointers just 30 seconds into the game, and a
Ryan McKeon (Landenberg, Pa./Sanford [Del.]) layup and
Jordan Stafford triple helped knot the score again, 8-all. The teams traded the lead three times over the next 1:35 of play and notched another tie, 16-all, with 10:25 left to play. Gettysburg began to build a lead with 3-pointers by
Antonello Baggi and Schaller that kicked off an 11-4 Gettysburg run, capped by back-to-back McKeon layups, to yield a 30-20 Gettysburg lead, their largest of the half to that point. With 2:25 left in the first stanza Messiah battled back with an and-one play and two 3-pointers to close within four. Stafford widened the gap back to six before Bryce Coletti hit a jumper with just 22 seconds left in the first half for a 37-33 Gettysburg lead going into the locker room.
• A basket by McKeon and two by Stafford quickly reestablished Gettysburg's 10-point advantage just over three minutes into the second half. However, Messiah used a 14-4 run over the next four minutes to tie the game once again, 47-all. Two Schaller free throws and a Johnny McBride layup knotted the score again once more before Gettysburg tore away. A Baggi triple kicked off a 6-0 Gettysburg run, to which Messiah responded with a Jack Ramsey jumper. The Bullets then went on another unanswered tear, scoring 10 straight points to increase their lead to 68-51. Coletti broke up the momentum momentarily with a 3-pointer before the Bullets used the final 3:46 to go on a 9-3 run, not allowing Messiah closer than fourteen points the rest of the way to set the final 77-57 margin.
