THE REST OF THE STORY
• Both teams scored a run in the first inning, with Gettysburg coming home on an error, wild pitch, and fielder's choice. Mt. Aloysius brought one in on a walk, fielder's choice, stolen base, and single. The Mounties kept Gettysburg scoreless and hitless in the top of the second, and tacked on two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 3-1 advantage.
• The Bullets took the lead in the top of the third, scoring three runs in the inning.
Jack Pistner led off with a triple, and a single by
Kyle Miller (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) brought him home. Miller advanced on an
Aaron Kirby (Sandy Hook, Conn./St. Joseph) walk, and both Miller and Kirby stole bases to put runners on second and third.
Preston Toothman hit a single up the middle to bring both Miller and Kirby in. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Mounties took the lead right back with a four-run inning. A fielding error, single, and sacrifice scored their first run, and a home run by Zack Peck scored two more. Two more singles gave the Mounties a 7-4 lead after three.
• The back-and-forth affair continued as the Bullets used a seven-run top of the fourth to take the lead again, 11-7. Gettysburg sent 14 batters to the plate and recorded the runs on four hits.
JR McCloskey (Huntington Station, N.Y./Chaminade) started things off with a single, and
David Preziuso hit a single to advance McCloskey to third. A Pistner walk loaded the bases, and a throwing error brought Pistner home and allowed Miller to reach first to load the bases once more. A double play took out two Bullets batters, but Preziuso managed to come home on the play to bring Gettysburg within one. With Pistner on third, Kirby was walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball as Pistner touched home plate to tie the game, 7-all. A double by Toothman drove in Kirby as the Bullets took the lead.
Mabret Levant (Lakeville, Pa./Wallenpaupack Area) was walked to load the bases, and McCloskey was walked in his second plate appearance of the inning, bringing in another run. A single by Preziuso scored the final two Bullets runs of the fourth inning for an 11-7 lead.
• In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Mounties scored another three to get within one. A fielding error, single, and fielder's choice brought in their first run, and a single, groundout, and double drove in the next two for an 11-10 ballgame. Two more Gettysburg runs in the top of the fifth increased their lead to two. A walk and Toothman doubled put runners on second and third, and a line drive single up the middle by
Tristan Neels (San Diego, Calif./Francis W. Parker) brought in the Bullets 12th and 13th runs. In the bottom of the inning, the Mounties recorded two hits and one out, before a 4-6-3 double play by Toothman, Pistner, and
Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) made it a scoreless bottom of the fifth.
• Preziuso was walked, and a Pistner home run to right field tacked two more runs on for the Bullets in the top of the sixth. Miller singled to shortstop and Kirby doubled to left field to drive him in. Toothman hit another single, and the Mounties committed an error that advanced him to second and sent Kirby home for the Bullets' third run of the inning, yielding a 17-10 score.
• In the bottom of the sixth, a Mountie was walked and Peck hit his second homer over the right field side of the fence for two more Mt. Aloysius runs. Three straight singles made it a 17-13 ballgame. A wild pitch allowed one more Mt. Aloysius run to score, before pitcher
Alexander Wilkie-Viscio (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) came out of the pen for the Bullets to send three straight batters packing and get Gettysburg out of the inning.
• In the seventh inning, Gettysburg added two more runs on a Preziuso single and wild pitch, as well as doubles by Pistner and Seibert. In the bottom of the inning, Mt. Aloysius added one more on a double and single for a 19-15 score.
• The top of the eighth saw a fielder's choice put McCloskey at first, and Preziuso doubled to left center to drive him in. After Preziuso stole third, Pistner was walked and tried to steal third. The Mounties passed the ball around as they eventually caught Pistner, but before they could, Preziuso scored on the throw to give the Bullets a six-run lead, 21-15. The bottom of the inning allowed Mt. Aloysius to get closer, scoring three runs on three hits. The Mounties tacked on three singles and two walks to help them earn the runs and come within three, 21-18.
• In the top of the ninth, the Mt. Aloysius defense recorded three straight outs to give them a chance to catch the Bullets. The first Mounties batter was hit by pitch, after which Levant came in to throw. Mt. Aloysius scored one run on the HBP and two singles, bringing them within two at 21-19. Another single and sacrifice bunt scored their third run of the inning and made it a one run game. Fortunately for the Bullets, Levant struck out a batter and the final Mounties batter fouled out to end the game, 21-20.
