THE SKINNY STORY
Ohio Wesleyan held onto a shutout through the first half of play, but several penalty corners for both teams helped the Bullets score two in the second half and the Battling Bishops net one for a 3-2 final score.
THE LEADERS
•
Jane Mezzanotte (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./ Mt. St. Joseph Academy) scored her first collegiate goal and Gettysburg's first of the game.
•
Brinsley Rushe (Darien, Conn./Darien) netted the final goal of the game in the last few seconds.
FOR THE FOES
• Brynn Schlesinger made 13 saves for the Battling Bishops.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Emma Wright got the scoring started for Ohio Wesleyan just 50 seconds into the second quarter, as she grabbed a pass from Allie Crawford and dribbled up the right side to find the back of the net and give the Battling Bishops the advantage. Mattison Hyland then gave OWU the insurance goal with just three seconds left in the first half, rebounding a shot off a
Katie Regan (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) defensive save.
• It took just under ten minutes into the second half for the Bullets to break up the shutout. After six Gettysburg penalty corners in the span of eight minutes,
Sam Woolery (Media, Pa./Penncrest) tipped the ball high to
Jane Mezzanotte, who was able to smack it in from the back post to get the Bullets on the scoreboard. Ohio Wesleyan got only one look off a penalty corner in the third quarter, but Bullets goalie
Emilia Saccento (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) made the stop.
• An Allie Crawford penalty corner goal only 50 seconds into the final quarter put the Battling Bishops back out to a two-goal lead, 3-1, but the rest of the fourth quarter was controlled offensively by Gettysburg. After two penalty corners and four saves by Schlesinger,
Morgan Cherry (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) tipped the ball to
Brinsley Rushe, who blasted a shot from the top of the arc past the defense and into the cage with only 14 seconds left in the game. Gettysburg tried for another corner to even the score in the final seconds, but was turned away by OWU's defense for a 3-2 final.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Gettysburg took 17 shots, with 15 on cage, while Ohio Wesleyan took eight, all of which were on the mark.
• The Bullets also had a clear 11-4 advantage in corners.
•
Sarah Scott (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) made a game-high two defensive saves, including a dive across the cage at the 48-minute mark.
