THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed, defeating No. 20 Maryville (Tenn.) 84-78 in the opening round of the Hampden-Sydney Tip-Off Tournament.

THE LEADERS
Jordan Stafford (Galloway, N.J./St. Joseph Hammonton) led the Bullets with a career-high 29 points. He also had team highs of eight rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots. Stafford was 13 of 18 from the field.

FOR THE FOES
• Reed Kemp led the Scots with 28 points of his own, going 11 of 22 from the floor and hitting 4 of 7 from long range. He also pulled down 10 rebounds.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• Gettysburg jumped out to a 7-0 lead on buckets by three different players in the first 1:32. Holding the lead at 12-9, Nate Williams (Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianney) drained a 3-pointer to start a 10-0 run over a span of 3 minutes, 39 seconds to build a 22-9 advantage with 12:32 to play in the opening half. Maryville countered with the next seven points to close back to within six. Ray Zamloot (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) hit a triple to re-establish a double-digit lead and spark a 16-5 run over a 4-minute, 44-second span that stretched the lead to 41-23 with 3:13 to play. Four points from Jordan Stafford in the final minute of the half gave the Bullets a 47-31 advantage at the break.
• The lead remained no closer than nine points through the first 17 minutes of the second half. After the Scots closed to within 58-49 on a Reed Kemp fast-break layup, Stafford responded with a dunk with 11:01 to play. That ignited an 8-0 run that reestablished a 17-point advantage just 1:40 later. Trailing 72-59, a pair of Kemp 3-pointers as part of an 8-2 burst that closed the deficit to seven with 2:22 remaining. Maryville got to within 77-72 with a Chase Morgan 3-pointer with just 67 ticks remaining. The Bullets, however, went 7 of 8 from the charity stripe in the final minute to ice the victory.

In addition to Jordan Stafford's 29, Nate Williams added 19 while Carl Schaller (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Aidan Mess (Brookeville, Md./Mount St. Joseph) each contributed 10 points.
