Gettysburg built a six-point lead late in the second half before going 6-for-8 from the charity stripe in the final 30 seconds to win its second game in two days against a nationally-ranked team, topping No. 23 Hampden-Sydney to win the Hampden-Sydney Tip-Off Tournament, 81-78.

THE LEADERS

FOR THE FOES

THE REST OF THE STORY
• Travis Stickney scored four points in the first 2:46 of the game before Rassoul Abakar (Cameroon/Notre Dame Fairfield [Conn.]) hit a 3-pointer with 15:07 remaining. After the teams started a combined 2-for-19 from the field, Nate Williams pulled up and hit an elbow jumper for a 5-4 lead with 13:48 showing but back-to-back 3-pointers from Colin Radcliffe and Hamilton Campbell gave the hosts a 10-5 lead less than a minute later. A Carl Schaller 3-pointer sparked an 8-0 Gettysburg run over just 75 seconds to take a 13-10 lead. After the teams traded buckets, the Tigers put together an 8-0 run of their own for a 20-15 advantage with 7:59 showing. Akim Joseph (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Notre Dame Fairfield [Conn.]) scored off an inbounds to halt a 3-minute, 13-second scoring drought. The Bullets then put together a 14-2 run to open up a 29-22 lead on a Malachi Briscoe (California, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) dunk with 4:09 showing. Alex Cannon responded with a follow-up dunk of his own. Hampden-Sydney pulled even at 31-all on a Radcliffe corner trey but Schaller answered with a wing triple to give Gettysburg a 34-31 halftime lead.
• Back-to-back buckets from Shane Farnald gave the hosts a 35-34 edge in the first 90 seconds of the second half. An Ayman McGowan three-point play extended the advantage to 38-36 before Joseph hit a triple and Schaller drove and scored for a 41-38 Bullets lead with 16:09 to play. Tied at 44-all after an Adam Brazil driving layup with 14:05 showing, Gettysburg went on a 7-2 run to take a five-point lead midway through the half. Radcliffe, however, scored five straight to tie the game once again with 8:58 on the clock. Seven points from Schaller keyed a 10-3 run that gave the visitors a 61-54 lead with 6:47 remaining. Fernald hit both ends of a 1-and-1 to tie the game at 66-all but Williams drained a kick-out second chance 3-pointer to regain the lead for Gettysburg 69-66 with 3:47 showing. Tied at 71-all, Schaller hit two free throws with 1:26 to play before Brazil connected on just 1 of 2 on the other end. A third-chance layup from Schaller stretched the lead to 75-72 with 46 seconds left. Williams hit a pair from the charity stripe with 25.6 seconds left and Aidan Mess (Brookeville, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) went 1-for-2 10 seconds later to open up a 78-72 lead. Brazil converted a three-point play with 8.9 seconds left. Trailing 79-75, Brazil then pulled up two steps over halfcourt to cut the deficit to one with 2.6 seconds left. Schaller, however, returned the lead to three with two free throws with just 1.7 seconds left.

THE INSIDE STORY
Jordan Stafford recorded nine points, 11 rebounds and five assists to earn tournament most valuable player honors. Schaller joined Stafford on the all-tournament team.
