THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg split their season-opening doubleheader with Averett, falling in the first game 14-7 before coming back to earn the 17-11 win in the second.

THE LEADERS
Matthew Vivona (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) tallied seven hits across both games in his first collegiate appearance.
Tyler Hillson (Gettysburg, Pa./Delone Catholic) pitched three innings of relief with no earned runs in the second game.

FOR THE FOES
• Brandt Brophy had five knocks across both games for the Cougars

THE REST OF THE STORY
• In the first game, Jack Pistner (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tripled in his first at-bat of the season to knock in David Preziuso (Selbyville, Del./Caravel Academy) from his single. Pistner was brought home on an error for a 2-0 Gettysburg lead. In the bottom of the inning, Trevor Testerman homered to cut into Gettysburg's edge. Brophy doubled in the bottom of the third to bring in a tying second run for the Cougars, but another Averett error in the top of the fourth allowed Brendan Laqui (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) to come home to push Gettysburg back out in front.
• Two singles and a stolen base brought in Averett's third run of the day, and they scored their fourth on a passed ball in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-3 Cougars lead. They extended their advantage to two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a double and a wild pitch, but in the top of the eighth Gettysburg tied things up with a Vivona single, stolen base, and Alexey Stout (Wall, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) double-RBI single to even it up, 5-all.
• Gettysburg gave up nine runs on eight hits in the bottom of the eighth to give Averett the 14-5 lead, and couldn't get closer than 14-7 in the top of the ninth.
• In game two, Gettysburg started by sending 11 to the plate and scoring five runs on three hits and one error. Two walks and a Pistner single loaded the bases, and Vivona knocked in the first run before Jack Burke (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) was hit by pitch to bring home the second. A fielder's choice and Brian Andersen (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) single scored runs four and five in the top of the first. Averett countered with just one run in the bottom of the inning, and Gettysburg tacked on one more on an Adam Hicks (Edgewater, Md./Gilman School) single in the top of the second for a 6-1 lead.
• Averett came back to within one run in the bottom of the second, scoring on a hit batter, single and wild pitch. Burke had the answer with a single in the top of the fourth to drive in another run for Gettysburg, but the Cougars scored twice more in the bottom of the fourth on three hits for a 7-all tie.
• The Bullets regained the lead, 13-7, in the top of the fifth, on another Vivona knock, Burke double, Hicks single, and Andersen single. Two doubles and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning allowed the Cougars to close within three, but a Hunter Del Guercio (Millstone, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) single knocked in two more runs and Hillson came in in the bottom of the inning for a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth and seventh.
• Averett advanced their final run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth. Gettysburg tacked on two more on a Stout single and Vivona double for a 17-11 final.
