THE SKINNY STORY
Amherst, ranked 12th in the latest USILA poll, outscored 13th-ranked Gettysburg 3-1 in the first quarter and held on through a Gettysburg offensive push for a close 9-8 victory.
THE LEADERS
•
Jack Dunleavy (New Providence, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) paced the attack with three goals.
FOR THE FOES
• Bob Gross led Amherst's offense with five points on three goals and two assists.
THE REST OF THE STORY
•
Colin Johnston (Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored the first goal of the game just over three minutes into the contest, but Amherst responded with three straight over a five minute span to lead 3-1. Brendan Reilly scored first for the Mammoths out of a timeout, and just over four minutes later Gross sent a pass to Alex Giacobbe for the visitors' second tally. Giacobbe then dealt the ball to Thompson Lau to set the two-goal margin after the first 15 minutes.
• A faceoff win by Nicholas Kopp and dish to Gross made it four straight goals for Amherst just nine seconds into the second quarter. A win in the subsequent faceoff by Amherst left them with the ball right in front of their own goal, where it was misplayed into the cage for a Mammoths own-goal and Gettysburg's second tally of the day. Bennett Chow got a goal back for the visitors with 10:42 showing and Kopp won the faceoff and made a solo dash to the cage for a 6-2 advantage. Gross finished the 3-0 run with a goal just under two minutes later. In the final 6:42, Dunleavy converted and
Jackson Hearn (Houston, Texas/Episcopal Bellaire) got the ball to
Stokes Myers (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) to cut back within just three goals. An unassisted tally by
Quinton Mather (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) was the final goal of the second quarter for a 7-5 Amherst lead going into the break.
•
Jack Dunleavy (New Providence, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) scored the only goal of the third quarter just 1:37 into the second half, after grabbing a pass from
Charlie Johnson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton). Gettysburg tallied 13 shots while allowing Amherst just three in the remaining 13:23, but neither team could find the back of the net for a 7-6 score going into the final quarter.
• Amherst broke their long scoring drought with a tally by Giacobbe to get back out to a two-goal lead. Goals by Gross and
Will Hedley (Charlotte, N.C./The Hotchkiss School) within 59 seconds of one another maintained the differential, before Dunleavy scored his third goal of the day with just 2:11 left. In the final two minutes, both teams pressed hard and neither found a score for a 9-8 final.
