THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg, ranked 15th in the latest USILA poll, used a big 5-0 third quarter to push past Franklin & Marshall, 8-5, in conference competition.
THE LEADERS
•
Patrick Maroney (Hingham, Mass./Boston College H.S.) scored three goals. He also grabbed two ground balls and caused one turnover.
•
Quinton Mather (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) and
Charlie Johnson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) each netted two.
FOR THE FOES
• James Moroney led the Diplomats' attack with one goal and two assists.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• A low-scoring opening quarter saw 19 combined shots but just one goal. After both teams fired nine shots each, Franklin & Marshall finally converted with just 27 seconds showing on a goal from Kai Kelly.
• Gettysburg got on the board just 27 seconds into the second quarter. A faceoff win by
Tate Kuster (Williamstown, Mass./The Williston Northampton School) allowed
Stokes Myers (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) to get a pass to Maroney for his first tally of the day. Just 2:27 later, Maroney scored again off a pass from
Jack Dunleavy (New Providence, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Bullets.
Quinton Mather (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) added one more to complete the Gettysburg 3-0 run. With 5:18 left in the half, Franklin & Marshall kickstarted their own 3-0 spurt, getting goals from Liam Timmins and Dillon Mannix in just 23 seconds to tie the game. One more by Jack Luviano in the final 3:22 of the half made it a 4-3 Diplomats lead going in to the locker rooms.
• Gettysburg came out firing in the third quarter, putting up five goals while the defense held the Diplomats to zero. Maroney completed the hat trick with an assist from
Matt Maciolek (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), and
Ethan Kessler (Ridgefield, Conn./Millbrook School) followed with a solo tally. Two back-to-back Johnson goals stretched the advantage to 7-4, and Mather added one more on the quarter on a man-up opportunity and pass from Kessler.
• The back-and-forth final quarter mirrored the first, with a combined 11 shots but just one final goal from Franklin & Marshall in the final 1:46 for a 8-5 Gettysburg win.
