THE SKINNY STORY
Dickinson built an 8-4 lead through five innings before scoring 10 runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Gettysburg by run rule, 18-5.
THE LEADERS
•
Jack Burke (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) hit a triple and a two-run home run to lead the Bullets offensively. He also added two RBI.
FOR THE FOES
• Kenny Tagliareni had two hits, including one for extra bases, five RBI, and two stolen bases.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the first inning but Dickinson plated the first two runs of the day in the top of the second. Josh Markley sent a two-out double to center field and Christian Kim walked, before both runners stole a base and Markley came home on a Bullets throwing error. An RBI single by Luke Gartland gave the Red Devils the early 2-0 lead.
• The visitors made it a 6-0 lead in the top of the third. After a flyout, a hit batter and single put runners at the corners. A fielder's choice allowed the batter to reach, and Ryan Thompson scored on the ensuing Gettysburg error. With two on, Chase Weller homered to left field to give the Red Devils the six-run advantage.
• Gettysburg got one back in the home half of the inning. After a dropped fly that allowed
Brian Andersen (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) to reach,
Mabret Levant (Lakeville, Pa./Wallenpaupack Area) singled and reached second on an error, putting both runners in scoring position. The Bullets were only able to plate one, however, with a
David Preziuso (Selbyville, Del./Caravel Academy) single.
• Dickinson put up one more in the top of the fourth by stringing together three-one out singles and a walk to lead 7-1. They then made it 8-1 in the next inning after a single, throwing error, and groundout.
• In the home half of the fifth, Andersen took a pitch to the back, and Levant doubled to bring Andersen home for Gettysburg's second run of the day.
Jack Burke (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) then sent a one-out home run over the left field fence to cut the deficit to four runs, 8-4.
• The margin held until the top of the seventh, in which the Red Devils sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs on eight hits. Three free passes and a double by Kenny Tagliareni pushed the lead back to 11-4. The visitors then strung together three singles and a triple to lead 14-4. The 15th run was walked in, and two more singles made it an 18-4 game. With the run rule in effect, Gettysburg needed to score five runs in the bottom of the inning to continue play. Ultimately, they were able to plate just one. With one out, Burke tripled to center field and jogged home on a
Jack Pistner (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) sacrifice fly to set the 18-5 final margin.
