THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg held a 5-3 lead after three innings, but Johns Hopkins, ranked eighth in the latest d3Baseball poll, used a five-run fourth inning and held the Bullets to just three more on the way to a 13-8 win in the first game of the home-and-home series.
THE LEADERS
•
Robert Murphy (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) led the Gettysburg offense, hitting 3-for-5 with a double, a run, and a stolen base.
FOR THE FOES
• Caleb Cyr paced the Blue Jays with a 3-for-3 day, including two home runs. He notched four RBI and drew two walks.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Gettysburg put up four runs in the top of the second after sending 10 to the plate. After
Alexey Stout (Wall, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) drew the second walk of the inning,
Robert Murphy doubled to put two in scoring position. Back-to-back one-out singles by
Mabret Levant (Lakeville, Pa./Wallenpaupack Area) and
Brian Andersen (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) plated Gettysburg's first two runs of the day. Two more singles by
David Preziuso (Selbyville, Del./Caravel Academy) and
Jack Burke (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) made it a 4-0 Bullets lead before a groundout ended the inning.
• Gettysburg tacked on another in the top of the third. After Stout reached on an error, Murphy singled and both runners stole a base. A groundout RBI by Levant allowed Stout to come home. In the bottom of the inning, Dylan Whitney drew a leadoff walk and advanced on a wild pitch, before a Shawn Steuerer double and Dillon Souvignier RBI groundout scored the Blue Jays' first run of the day. With Steuerer at third, Caleb Cyr hit his first home run of the day to cut the deficit to just two runs, 5-3.
•
Jack Burke (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) opened the fourth inning with a home run over the left center fence to regain the three-run lead for Gettysburg, but the Blue Jays made quick work of the next three batters. The bottom of the inning also saw a leadoff home run, this time by Jimmy Stevens. Whitney then smacked a one-out single and two Blue Jays received free passes to load the bases. After a strikeout, Cyr drew a walk and the next two Johns Hopkins batters reached on a hit by pitch and an error, respectively, with both free passes bringing in runs to give Johns Hopkins their first lead of the game, 7-6. Another walk made it an 8-6 ballgame before the final out.
• In the bottom of the seventh, the first two batters grounded out before Alex Shane hit a home run to make it a 9-6 ballgame. A single by Steuerer put him on first to make it a two-run home run when Souvignier stepped up and sent the ball over the right side of the fence. Cyr followed immediately after with his second home run of the day to double up on Gettysburg, 12-6.
• The Blue Jays scored their final run of the day in the bottom of the eighth. After a leadoff double, Jake Siani moved to third on a throwing error and came home on a fielder's choice. In the top of the ninth,
Jack Pistner (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) drew a walk and
Kyle Crozier (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) singled to put two on. A groundout put both runners in scoring position, and a double by Stout brought home both runs. The Bullets would get no closer, grounding out and striking out to end the game.
