THE SKINNY STORY
Franklin & Marshall used a six-run fourth inning to build a 7-1 lead before having to stave off a late comeback attempt by Gettysburg for an 11-8 victory.
THE LEADERS
•
Jack Burke (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) led the Bullets with two hits and two runs in the game.
FOR THE FOES
• Michael von Zuben went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Diplomats. He also stole two bases.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Michael von Zuben walked to lead off the home second before stealing second. A Drew Butera single put runners at the corners before a one-out Andrew
Filippelli single through the left side staked Franklin & Marshall to a 1-0 lead but ultimately led the bases loaded in the frame.
•
Brendan Laqui (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) responded with a leadoff single in the third before a failed pickoff attempt allowed him to move to third and score on a
Matthew Vivona (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) RBI groundout to tie the game.
• A pair of errors coupled with five hits helped the Diplomats explode for six runs in the fourth inning. A throwing error and failed pickoff put Matt Hollander at third to start the inning before Filippelli singled for a 2-1 lead. A walk and bunt single loaded the bases before a one-out Spencer Berson two-run single made it a 4-1 game. Hoffman followed with an RBI double for a 5-1 lead before von Zuben singled to score two more and make it a 7-1 game.
• A Patrick Cettina double, stolen base and AJ Desautels sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 8-1 in the home fifth.
•
Jack Burke and
Jack Pistner (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) started the sixth with back-to-back singles before
Emmanuel Ajewole (Floral Park, N.Y./Stony Brook School) singled to load the bases. An
Adam Hicks (Edgewater, Md./Gilman School) sacrifice fly plated Burke but a pair of strikeouts around a walk stranded the bases loaded.
• The teams traded two runs in their halves of the seventh to keep it a six-run game.
David Preziuso (Selbyville, Del./Caravel Academy) walked with one out in the top of the inning before Burke and Pistner each singled to make it an 8-3 game before an Ajewole groundout made it 8-4. A Bobby Falese RBI single and Hoffman sacrifice fly accounted for the two F&M runs and push the lead back to 10-4.
•
Robert Murphy (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) walked to lead off the eighth before
Alexey Stout (Wall, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) singled to put runners at the corner. A
Kody Clausius (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) pinch-hit, one-out RBI single scored Murphy before Stout scored on a Preziuso groundout to make it 10-6.
• von Zuben singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk in the home eighth to push the advantage back to five.
• With one out in the ninth,
Matt Nichols (White Plains, N.Y./Byram Hills) singled to left before
Kyle Crozier (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) added a pinch-hit single. A
Will Stellato (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) pinch-hit single down the line scored Nichols to make it 11-7. A fielding error allowed Crozier to score and bring the tying run to the plate. Thomas McLaughlin, however, came on in relief and got a strikeout and popup to finish off the game and pick up the save.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Will Stelleto recorded his first collegiate hit in his first at bat of the season with his pinch-hit appearance in the ninth.
•
Jack Pistner and
Emmanuel Ajewole added two hits on the day each.
