THE SKINNY STORY
Ranked sixteenth in the latest USILA poll, Swarthmore prevailed in a big Centennial Conference matchup by controlling the faceoff X and outscoring No. 9 Gettysburg in three of four quarters for a 13-9 final.
THE LEADERS
•
Patrick Maroney (Hingham, Mass./Boston College H.S.) and
Ethan Kessler (Ridgefield, Conn./Millbrook School) each scored two goals.
•
Quinton Mather (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) led the Bullets in points with three on one goal and two assists.
FOR THE FOES
• Michael Hardiman finished with four goals to lead the Garnet.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Gettysburg struck first after
Charlie Johnson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) finished a pass from Mather almost 10 minutes into the game. Michael Hardiman responded for the Garnet with an unassisted tally, and he made it a 2-1 Swarthmore lead after one quarter with his second goal of the day in the final two minutes of the period.
• Hardiman got the hat trick just 47 seconds into the second quarter for a 3-1 lead. Mather cut the deficit back to just one goal on a solo run, but Von Mabbs scored his first of the day to reestablish the two-goal advantage. A crosscheck by the Garnet awarded the Bullets an extra-man opportunity, and Kessler converted off a pass from Johnson. With 4:07 left in the half, Mather got the ball to
Jack Dunleavy (New Providence, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) for his first goal of the day to tie the game 4-all going into halftime.
• Ryder Maston regained the lead for the hosts just over three minutes into the second half to kick off a 4-0 run for the Garnet. Clay Almgren made it a 6-4 game just 27 seconds after the opening goal off a faceoff win. Carter Strauch scored another with 7:08 showing, and Swarthmore capitalized on a man-up opportunity to double up on the Bullets, 8-4. Gettysburg stemmed the bleeding with a Dunleavy to
Patrick Maroney (Hingham, Mass./Boston College H.S.) goal, and Kessler scooped the ground ball off a blocked shot to score and bring the game back to two goals, 8-6.
Stokes Myers (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) ended the Gettysburg 3-0 run with an unassisted goal to close within just one goal going into the final quarter.
• Swarthmore regained a two-goal lead early in the final quarter off play as Hardiman scored his fourth of the day. Almgren made it a 10-7 game with 10:46 showing, but a Gettysburg faceoff win led to a
Griffin Hough (Bourne, Mass./Tabor Academy) goal to force a Garnet timeout. The hosts scored two within 43 seconds to make it a 12-8 game before Maroney netted the Bullets' second goal of the quarter to keep the Garnet three away. Swarthmore snuck in one more man-up goal in the final 42 seconds to stop a Gettysburg comeback and snatch the 13-9 win.
