THE REST OF THE STORY
• Dickinson jumped out to a 7-2 lead through the game's first 3:42 before
Carl Schaller (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Joey Dopirak traded 3-pointers. Five more points from Schaller and a
Lorenzo Carrara (Norwood, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) triple capped a 9-3 run that gave Gettysburg a one-point edge with 12:58 showing. Dickinson went back in front 14-13 on an Andrew Cerullo floater but
Nate Williams responded with a trey and Schaller added a free throw for a 17-14 advantage. Another William corner 3-pointer opened up the biggest lead for either team at 27-21 with 4:30 to play in the opening half. Dopirak ended a 2-minute, 40-second drought for the Red Devils with a teardrop from short range then Ryan Leskauskas drove the lane to cut the margin to two. Five free throws from Leskauskas in the final 37.6 seconds gave the hosts a 32-29 lead at the break.
• After an
Akim Joseph (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Notre Dame Fairfield [Conn.]) layup made it 32-31 early in the second half, Dickinson responded with seven of the next nine points to open up a 39-33 advantage with 16:41 showing. A Schaller free throw and 3-pointers from Williams and
Jordan Stafford gave Gettysburg a one-point lead less than two minutes later. The run extended to 11 straight before Dopirak hit a 3-poitner from the wing to halt a 3-minute, 44-second scoring drought. Triples from Schaller and Williams on back-to-back possessions turned a 46-44 game into an eight-point lead with 11:11 to play. Two Stafford free throws with 7:37 remaining made it a 56-46 game and opened up the first double-digit lead of the contest. Dickinson closed to within 58-49 with 3:54 to play but Gettysburg responded with six straight points in just one minute to seal the victory.
