THE SKINNY STORY
Montclair State, ranked 23rd in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, shot 60.6 percent in the first half to build a 50-38 lead and defeated Gettysburg, 84-65.

THE LEADERS
Nate Williams (Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianney) led the Bullets with 14 points and seven rebounds.

FOR THE FOES
• Jacob Morales led the Red Hawks with 30 points that included hitting 12 of 19 from the floor and 6 of 9 from 3-point range. He also had four rebounds, three assists and four steals.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• After a back-and-forth start, Myles Primas hit a layup on the break for an 8-6 lead with 15:31 showing in the opening half, sparking a 12-0 run in just two minutes to build a double-digit lead for the first time. A Lorenzo Carrara (Norwood, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) thee-point play and Williams 3-pointer bookended an 8-0 burst that trimmed the margin to 24-20 with 8:28 remaining. A Christian Cevis layup just over four minutes later made it double-digit lead again at 36-26 and the lead grew as large as 15 en route to the 12-point halftime edge.
• A Jacob Morales layup and Kabrien Goss second-chance triple stretched the lead to 55-38 just over a minute into the second half. Gettysburg clawed back to within 12 three times but that was as close as the visitors could get in the second half. Leading 61-48, Morales hit a jumper with 11:06 on the clock to start a 13-5 game-clinching run over the next 4:35. He had seven of Montclair's points in the stretch.

THE INSIDE STORY
Aidan Mess (Columbia, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) added 12 points while Lorenzo Carrara chipped in 11. Mess also had seven rebounds.
• Gettysburg held a 42-32 edge on the glass.
• The Red Hawks shot 53.8 percent for the game while the Bullets shot 37.5 percent.

Gettysburg returns to action against Notre Dame (Md.) at the Governor's Challenge in Salisbury, Md., on Saturday. Game time is 7 p.m.
