Montclair State, ranked 23rd in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, shot 60.6 percent in the first half to build a 50-38 lead and defeated Gettysburg, 84-65.

Nate Williams (Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianney) led the Bullets with 14 points and seven rebounds.
FOR THE FOES
• Jacob Morales led the Red Hawks with 30 points that included hitting 12 of 19 from the floor and 6 of 9 from 3-point range. He also had four rebounds, three assists and four steals.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• After a back-and-forth start, Myles Primas hit a layup on the break for an 8-6 lead with 15:31 showing in the opening half, sparking a 12-0 run in just two minutes to build a double-digit lead for the first time. A
Lorenzo Carrara (Norwood, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) thee-point play and Williams 3-pointer bookended an 8-0 burst that trimmed the margin to 24-20 with 8:28 remaining. A Christian Cevis layup just over four minutes later made it double-digit lead again at 36-26 and the lead grew as large as 15 en route to the 12-point halftime edge.
• A Jacob Morales layup and Kabrien Goss second-chance triple stretched the lead to 55-38 just over a minute into the second half. Gettysburg clawed back to within 12 three times but that was as close as the visitors could get in the second half. Leading 61-48, Morales hit a jumper with 11:06 on the clock to start a 13-5 game-clinching run over the next 4:35. He had seven of Montclair's points in the stretch.
THE INSIDE STORY

Aidan Mess (Columbia, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) added 12 points while
Lorenzo Carrara chipped in 11. Mess also had seven rebounds.
• Gettysburg held a 42-32 edge on the glass.
• The Red Hawks shot 53.8 percent for the game while the Bullets shot 37.5 percent.
