Notre Dame rallies to defeat Gettysburg

THE SKINNY STORY
Notre Dame (Md.) shot nearly 60 percent in the second half to overcome a 14-point deficit and rally to defeat Gettysburg 84-79 in the inaugural Governor's Challenge at the Wicomico County Civic Center.

THE LEADERS
Aidan Mess (Columbia, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) led four Bullets in double figures with 15 points. He also had four rebounds and three blocked shots.

FOR THE FOES
• Ricardo Ross led the Gators with 28 points that included hitting five 3-pointers and fuel the comeback. He added four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
• Marlon Lewis also reached the 20-point mark, pouring in 27 points to go with four rebounds and two steals.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• A Caleb Gillus (Falls Church, Va./Sidwell Friends School [D.C.]) 3-pointer helped stake Gettysburg to a 5-0 lead in the game's first three minutes. Notre Dame responded with the next six before two Ray Zamloot (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) free throws with 14:02 to play put the Bullets back in front by one. After three more ties and six lead changes, Aiden Mess drained a wing 3-pointer for a 23-21 lead that sparked a 13-5 run that gave Gettysburg a 33-26 advantage with just under four minutes to play. Zamloot bookended the streak with a triple of his own. The teams traded points until the break with the Bullets taking a 37-32 advantage to the second half.
• Holding a 41-35 lead, Nate Williams (Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianney) hit a triple with 17:00 showing to spark a quick 7-0 burst and open up a 48-35 advantage. The Gators pulled back within eight but 3-pointers from Lorenzo Carrara (Norwood, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) and Malachi Briscoe (California, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) help extend the lead to as large as 14 at 58-44 with 11 minutes to play. Ricardo Ross responded with three treys to help close the deficit to 62-57 just over three minutes later. Gillus canned a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 68-62 with 6:06 remaining Notre Dame tallied the next eight to take the lead with 3:46 on the clock. Another Gillus triple put the Bullets back in front 71-70 but Ross and Marlon Lewis combined to score the next six for a 76-71 lead with 1:56 showing and held on for the victory.

THE INSIDE STORY
• Notre Dame shot 49.2 percent for the game, including hitting 6 of 9 3-pointers.
• Gettysburg shot 41.5 percent, including canning a season-high 11 3-pointers.
Reece Craft and Caleb Gillus added 13 points each while Lorenzo Carrara added 11 and Ray Zamloot had nine.
