THE SKINNY STORY
Ursinus used a four-run third in the first game and a six-run fifth in the nightcap to get past No. 18 Gettysburg and earn a sweep. The Bears took the opener 7-3 before completing the sweep, 8-3.
THE LEADERS
•
Will Roche (Milton, Mass./Boston College H.S.) had at least one hit in both games for the Bullets, going 2-for-4 in the opener and 1-for-3 in game two.
•
Mike Coleman (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) was the only other player to have a hit in both games, recording one in game one and two in game two.
FOR THE FOES
• Luke Kopec led the Bears with five hits on the day to go with seven RBIs and three runs scored.
• Brett Barrett also had five hits.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• A
Dominick Balsamo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) double and
Michael Fischetti (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) single to start the top of the second staked Gettysburg to a 1-0 lead.
•
Will Stellato (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) drew a walk to lead off the third before a
Mike Coleman fielder's choice and
Jack Amirata (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberley Academy) double made it 2-0.
• A Luke Kopec single, error on a pickoff attempt and wild pitch made it 2-1.
• Three of the first four Ursinus batters singled to start the fifth and tie the game at 2-all. A hit batter loaded the bases before Matthew Callahan drove a single through the left side for a 4-2 lead and a Kopec three-run home run stretched the advantage to 7-2.
•
Will Roche led off the top of the sixth with his second homer of the year to make it 7-3 but the Bullets did not have another base runner until back-to-back singles with two outs in the top of the ninth but a punchout ended the threat.
• In game two,
Robert Murphy (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Gov. Livingston) led off with a walk before a throwing error put runners at the corners. A one-out Amirata sacrifice fly once again gave Gettysburg an early 1-0 lead.
• A one-out walk and stolen base before a Matthew Callahan single put runners at the corners for the Bears in the third. Kopec singled to tie the game before Brett Barrett singled to make it 2-1. An Isaac Gesford RBI single and double steal stretched the lead to 4-1.
•
Mike Coleman led off the fourth with a home run before two walks around a one-out error loaded the bases.
Brayden Casas (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) drew a pinch-hit walk to cut the margin to 4-3.
• After back-to-back strikeouts to start the home fourth, Kyle Rosefeld singled and two walks loaded the bases for Kopec, who doubled down the line to clear the bases and stretch the lead to 7-3 before the hosts tacked on a single run in the sixth for the final margin.
