THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg used a pair of nine-run innings to defeat Franklin & Marshall 18-16 in a game that was called in the top of the ninth inning due to darkness after a 4-hour, 16-minute contest.
THE LEADERS
•
Jack Amirata (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberley Academy) led the Bullets with three hits, two RBIs, two runs scored and a walk.
•
Will Roche (Milton, Mass./Boston College H.S.) also had three hits and two RBIs.
FOR THE FOES
• Tanner Wolpert led the Diplomats with a 4-for-6 day that included a pair of home runs.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Tanner Wolpert doubled with one out in the top of the first before a single and hit batter loaded the bases. A groundout scored the first run of the game.
• In the top of the third, Matt Hollender led off with a triple before scoring on a Gideon Schwartz sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. A Nick DiGiacomo single, stolen bases and throwing error on a strikeout put runners at the corners. After Nick Lorenzo stole second, an RBI groundout made it 3-0 before a Zac Fuscaldo triple and Ethan Conklin single stretched the advantage to 5-0.
•
Mike Coleman (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) started a nine-run fourth inning with a poke up the middle. Two walks and a Dominic Balsamo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) bases-loaded hit by pitch forced in Gettysburg's first run. An RBI groundout made it 5-2 before a pitching change and
Will Roche (Milton, Mass./Boston College H.S.) single cut the deficit to 5-3. Another RBI groundout made it 5-4 before two more walks reloaded the bases. Coleman walked to force in the tying run before
Will Stellato (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) dropped a single into center that cleared the bases.
Jack Amirata followed with a single up the middled to plate Stellato from second for a 9-5 lead.
• The Diplomats got all four runs back in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 9-all. Lorenzo doubled with one out before scoring on a Landon Hallett single. A walk and back-to-back two-out singles coupled with a pair of errors tied the game.
• The Bullets went back to work in the sixth with nine more runs. Stellato and Amirata each singled to start the frame. Balsamo and
Will Bercaw (Langhorne, Pa./The Pennington School) followed with five-pitch walks to put the hosts in front. Two hit batters around another walk pushed the lead to 13-9. A pair of RBI groundouts around another hit batter made it 15-9 before a two-run Balsamo single and Bercaw infield knock extended the advantage to 18-9.
• A Wolpert one-out home run in the seventh made it 18-10 before a six-run eighth closed the margin to two. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases to start the inning before Conklin chopped a ball down the line for two runs. An RBI groundout and two-run Wolpert long ball trimmed the deficit to 18-15. A Hollender double, walk and single loaded the bases again before an RBI groundout made it 18-16 and foul fly out kept the tying runners on base.
• A hit batter and infield single before a groundout put the tying runs in scoring position with one out in the top of the ninth before the umpires deemed it too dark to continue and called the game.
