GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College football team gave its Homecoming crowd a treat on Saturday, as the Bullets rushed for a school and Centennial Conference record 525 yards en route to a 59-14 victory over winless Juniata College in a Centennial Conference match-up at a soggy and cold Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
It was a record-setting day all-around for Gettysburg (3-4, 3-2 CC), which produced three 100-yard rushers and won for the third time in its last four games. Senior quarterback
Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) became the Centennial Conference all-time leader in passing yards, surpassing the former record of 7,239 yards set by McDaniel College's Brian Van Deusen from 1992-95.
In addition, junior tailback
Jamel Mutunga (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) ran for 129 yards and tied a school record with five touchdown carries while junior kicker
Mike Barrett (Selinsgrove, Pa./Lewisburg) was a perfect 8-for-8 on extra points, tying school records for PATs attempted and made. He also kicked a field goal to finish with 11 points.
Junior tailback
Anthony DeSalva (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) finished with a career-high 144 yards rushing on 18 carries while Flynn added a career-best 124 yards and one touchdown on the ground. He also threw for 151 yards on 9-of-13 passing in just three quarters of play to finish with 275 yards of total offense. He now has 8,307 total yards for his career, 320 shy of another Centennial Conference record.
Sophomore quarterback
Kyle Whitmoyer (Arendtsville, Pa./Biglerville) played the fourth quarter and rushed for 64 yards and two touchdowns on six carries while sophomore tailback
George Schmidt (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) ran for 46 yards on the Bullets final drive.
Junior wing
Charles Curcio (Hammonton, N.J./St. Joseph) led all players with 83 receiving yards on three catches.
Junior tailback Derek Kramer ran for a game-high 151 yards and two touchdowns to lead Juniata (0-7, 0-5 CC).
The Bullets, who entered the game leading Division III in total offense, outgained the Eagles 687-292. Gettysburg's 59 points marked the team's highest scoring output since its 61-6 win over Averett University in 2001.
After jumping to a 27-3 halftime lead last week against Moravian College, the Bullets posted another dominant offensive performance in the first half, scoring a touchdown on four of their first five drives. Gettysburg marched 67 yards on 11 plays on the game's opening drive, highlighted by Mutunga's first touchdown run of the game, a 1-yard plunge with 11:05 on the clock.
The Eagles came right back, moving 70 yards on 10 plays before Kramer plowed in from 10 yards out to tie it at 7-7 with 5:58 left in opening quarter. The Bullets fumbled on the ensuing kickoff, with the Eagles recovering at midfield, but Juniata was unable to take advantage, going three-and-out.
Gettysburg answered by reaching paydirt on its next three possessions. Mutunga ran a 3-yard touchdown run with 2:14 on the clock, capping a nine-play, 99-yard drive, and the Bullets recovered a Juniata fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Five plays later, Flynn sprinted in from 6 yards out to give the hosts a 21-7 lead with 1:02 left in the opening quarter.
Mutunga struck again with 13:32 left in the first half, peeling of a 21-yard touchdown run to give the Bullets a 28-7 advantage. But Gettysburg's final two drives of the half ended with interceptions in the end zone, and Kramer ran for a 5-yard touchdown with 3:16 left to make it a 28-14 game at the intermission.
It was all Bullets in the second half, however, as Gettysburg finished on a 31-0 run. Defensively, the Bullets forced Juniata to go three-and-out on three of the Eagles first four second-half possessions, with two resulting in a turnover.
Mutunga scored on back-to-back touchdown runs to open the half, scoring from 4 and 10 yards out to extend his team's advantage to 42-14 with 7:24 left in the third quarter. His second TD of the half was set up by a Gettysburg forced fumble on a sack by defensive tackles
Sebastian Sullivan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and
Matt Dietz (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) that Dietz recovered at the Juniata-18.
Gettysburg converted the Eagles final turnover into three points when junior cornerback
Tairi Mobley (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) made his team-leading third interception of the season at the Gettysburg-25. The Bullets then drove to the Eagle-8 before Barrett came on for a 25-yard field goal to make it 45-14 with 43 seconds left in the third quarter.
Whitmoyer applied the finishing touches, scoring on touchdown runs of 9 and 4 yards in the fourth quarter for his first two collegiate touchdowns.
Sullivan led the Bullets with 10 tackles while sophomore linebacker
Joe Delaney (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and senior linebacker
Tim Widdoes (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) made eight and seven hits, respectively.
Senior linebacker Tyler Hall led all players with 12 tackles for Juniata while junior defensive end Matt Walton made 11 stops.
Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference next Saturday, when it hosts Dickinson College at 1 p.m.
