BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's cross country team turned in an outstanding showing at the 36th annual Brooks Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University, on Friday.
Competing in the Men's College Brown 8K, the Bullets earned a score of 280, took fourth out of 38 teams, and were second among Division III schools. Each of the men's team's top-five runners recorded a personal-record (PR) time, and there was a 57-second split between the Bullets Nos. 1-5 runners.
Gettysburg's women's team ran in the Women's College Brown 6K race, and led by senior
Kerrin Epstein's (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) stellar seventh-place finish, placed 15th among 39 schools. The Bullets finished third among Division III competition.
One of the top college country meets in the region, this year's Paul Short Run was the largest in the event's history, featuring over 5,000 runners competing in 14 college and high school races.
Both the men's and women's teams competed against a mix of Division I, II, and III schools, including several nationally-ranked Division III opponents. The men's team finished just eight points behind third-place finisher, No. 34 Johns Hopkins University, and the Bullets placed well ahead of No. 33 College of New Jersey, which was 16th.
Leading the men's squad was junior
Clay Reynolds (Medway, Mass./Worcester Prep), who took 23rd among 322 harriers. Running his first 8K of the season, Reynolds was clocked at 25:39, a PR by 45 seconds. Senior
Jeff Butterworth (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) placed 32nd in 25:49 while classmate
Adrian Macdonald (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) took 47th in 26:05.
Completing the team scoring were sophomore Brendan Repack (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack), who was 68th in 26:17, and junior
Thomas Daniels (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock),who placed 110th in 26:36. Also running were junior Dan O'Neill (Monroe, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep.), who finished 123rd in 26:44, and senior
Chris McCullough (Havertown, Pa./Malvern Prep.), who was 157th in 26:56.
Ricky Flynn of Lynchburg College won the race in 24:43. Wayne State University won the men's team title with 184 points while Adelphi University was second with a score of 190. Both are Division II schools.
Epstein shaved 29 seconds off her PR, crossing the finish line in 21:50. Senior
Sarah Fritz (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) came up just one second shy of a PR, placing 30th in the field of 337 in 22:30. Freshman
Christine Esposito (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) traversed the course in 23:24, finishing 84th in 23:24.
Sophomore
Kyler Philbin (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) was 148th in 23:59 while freshman
Emily Smith (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) rounded out the team scoring, taking 203rd in 24:44. Also running were junior
Casey Lumpkin (Newtown, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy), who placed 213th in 24:56, and freshman
Yaa Addison (Washington, D.C./St. Andrew's Episcopal School), who took 217th in 25:01.
The women's team finished ahead of a pair of ranked Division III teams – No. 35 SUNY Cortland, which placed 16th, and No. 33 Messiah College, which finished 25th.
Division II Kutztown University won the team title with 111 points. Tina Yi of Edinboro University won the race in 21:05.
Gettysburg's men's and women's team return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17, when they host the Gettysburg Invitational.
