Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Seniors Lexie Hearn (Greenwich, Conn./Old Greenwich) and Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) each scored second-half goals to lift the 15th-ranked Gettysburg College field hockey team to a big 2-1 victory over host McDaniel College in Centennial Conference play Wednesday afternoon.

The Bullets (11-3, 5-2 CC) entered the contest tied with McDaniel (6-8, 4-3 CC) for third place in the Centennial Conference standings, but Gettysburg now finds itself tied with Johns Hopkins University for second.

After a scoreless first half, Hearn scored the game's first goal just under two minutes into the second half. Taking a cross from freshman Katie Savage (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown), Hearn drove home a long shot from the right side for her team-leading eighth goal of the season. It also gave Savage her first collegiate assist.

Emala added what held up as the game-winning goal with 21:41 left when the Bullets cashed in on another corner. Senior Molly Latta (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) delivered a hard hit from the top, and Emala tapped it home in front past a diving McDaniel goalie to make it a 2-0 game. It was the fifth goal of the season for Emala.

McDaniel cut the deficit in half with 8:49 left, as Amanda Pickard scored off a rebound. The Green Terror had a chance to tie it just over a minute later after gaining a penalty corner, but senior goalie Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./Calverton School) saved the ensuing shot by Katherine Jones. The Bullets maintained possession the rest of the way.

Each team finished with seven shots, but Gettysburg held a 15-8 advantage in shots. Anderson finished with five saves while Stephanie Thomson stopped three shots for McDaniel.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday, when they host Swarthmore College in another Centennial Conference affair starting at 4:30 p.m.
