Gettysburg, Dickinson Dig against Breast Cancer

The Bullets were among the conference leaders in money raised to fight breast cancer last season.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College and Dickinson College will renew their long-time rivalry Wednesday, Oct. 28, inside Bream Gym, but it won't be the match that takes center stage as both teams will be joining together in the fight against breast cancer as part of the fourth annual “Digging for a Cure” campaign in the Centennial Conference.

For the last four seasons, all 11 volleyball teams in the Centennial Conference have banded together during the month of October to help wage the battle against breast cancer. Prior to its designated “Digging for a Cure” match, each conference school collected donations and pledges from friends, families, and team supporters for each dig the team recorded in its selected match. In the first three years of the campaign, the Centennial Conference raised over $26,000, with nearly half of that sum being added just last fall.

All the proceeds from “Digging for a Cure” will go directly to Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC), a non-profit organization based in Haverford, Pa., dedicated to empowering all women affected by breast cancer to live as long as possible with the best quality of life.

Gettysburg and Dickinson are the final two schools to take part in “Digging for a Cure.” Each team has been taking pledges and donations throughout the season and will continue to do so until the first week of November when the final sum will be announced at the Centennial Conference Volleyball Tournament on Nov. 7-8.

Additionally, the Bullets have been selling t-shirts in the College Union Building and will have a table set up near the entrance of Bream Gym on Wednesday for donations. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
