Box Score

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Junior defender Alyssa Heimbach (Palm, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) scored with 22:01 left in the game and the 13th-ranked Bullets clinched a first-round bye in the Centennial Conference playoffs, defeating host Muhlenberg College 1-0 in Centennial Conference action Friday evening.

Regardless of its outcome against Centennial Conference foe Swarthmore College in its regular season finale on Sunday, Gettysburg (13-4, 7-2 CC) will face No. 17 Johns Hopkins University in the conference semifinals Nov. 7 at top seed Ursinus College. Johns Hopkins and Gettysburg are currently tied for second in the conference standings.

Muhlenberg (9-8, 5-5 CC) will hope to gain one of the two remaining conference playoff spots. The regular season concludes this weekend.

The Bullets held a 13-7 advantage in penalty corners, including an 11-0 surplus in the second half, but they needed only one to cash in on their game-winner. On Gettysburg's sixth corner of the half, Heimbach started the game's pivotal play when she injected the ball into the circle before scoring off an assist from senior Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr). It was Heimbach's fourth goal of the season and her second game-winning tally of the year.

Gettysburg made the lead stand up by outshooting (4-0) and out-cornering (4-0) the Mules the rest of the way.

Muhlenberg had the upper hand in the first half, when it outshot the Bullets 6-3 and gained a 7-2 advantage in corners. The Mules threatened five minutes into the game, when they were awarded three corners over a 1:11 span before Jess Kasza's shot hit the post with 25:11 on the clock. Emala nearly put Gettysburg on top at the end of the half, but her shot was stopped by Brittany DeAngelis for a defensive save with just under two minutes to go.

The Bullets outshot the Mules 7-1 in the second half.

Senior goalie Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./Calverton School) finished with three saves to earn her eighth shutout of the year, tying the single-season school record set by Katherine Corkhill in 2005 and Maggie Tobin in 1994. Kristen Dornenburg turned aside four shots for Muhlenberg.

Gettysburg hosts Swarthmore at 1 p.m. on Sunday in a rescheduled game originally scheduled for last Saturday. The contest was postponed due to impending inclement weather.
