COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's basketball team is off to the best start in school history following a 59-38 decision at Ursinus College in Centennial Conference action Saturday afternoon. The Bullets are perfect at 8-0 overall this season, including 5-0 in the CC, topping the 7-0 start by the 1999-00 squad.
Gettysburg (8-0, 5-0 CC) chalked up another sterling effort on the defensive side of the court, holding Ursinus (5-3, 3-3 CC) to just four second-half field goals and a measly 30.4 percent shooting from the floor overall, marking the Bullets' eighth opponent in as many games to shoot below 40 percent. Junior
Mary Spicer (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and sophomore
Julie McGrory (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) led a well-balanced scoring effort with 11 points apiece.
Both teams were on target in the early going, with the hosts earning an 11-8 advantage on a lay-up by Lindsay Teuber just five minutes in. Gettysburg came right back with a jumper by sophomore
Lauren Dadigan (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), kicking off 10-0 run. The Orange and Blue out-scored the Bears 19-3 over a nearly eight-minute stretch to take a 27-14 advantage at 6:40.
Ursinus was down, but certainly not out, converting back-to-back buckets and a pair of free throws to pull to 27-21. The margin was cut down further as a Julie Bown jumper set the score at 33-28 at the break.
After an exchange of scores to start the final period, Gettysburg put the Bears away for good by scoring 16 of the next 17 points and taking a 51-31 lead with just over eight minutes left. Ursinus didn't do itself any favors with 12 missed shots and nine turnovers during that stretch.
The Bullets maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way with the advantage reaching a game-high 21 on the final bucket of the game by Collegeville native
Kate Knudson (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley).
Gettysburg shot 42.6 percent from the field and despite trailing early in the rebounding department, won the battle of the boards 35-34. The Bullets forced 28 turnovers by Ursinus, leading to 26 points.
Spicer reached double figures for the second consecutive game, adding game highs of five steals and four assists. McGrory tied her season high for the third time and added four rebounds and a pair of steals.
Gettysburg senior
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls), junior
Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing), and Dadigan each tallied eight points, with the former two grabbing four boards. Sophomore
Sara Kinsley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) led the Orange and Blue rebounding effort with eight caroms.
Ursinus' Lindsay Teuber narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Carolyn Konstanzer and Alli Rosati each posted six points, the latter adding seven rebounds.
Gettysburg receives a well-earned break from competition over the holidays before hosting its own Days Inn Tournament on Jan. 2-3. The Bullets will play Neumann University at 8 p.m. on Jan. 2, preceded by Alvernia University and Richard Stockton College at 6 p.m.
