GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's basketball team will put its unbeaten record to the test when it hosts three teams for the 20th Annual Days Inn Tournament on Jan. 2-3 inside Bream Gym.
Gettysburg (8-0, 5-0 CC), which is off to the best start in school history, will be joined by Alvernia University (4-1, 2-0 MAC CC), Neumann University (5-2, 1-0 CSAC), and Richard Stockton College (5-2, 1-0 NJAC).
The Bullets have won the Days Inn Tournament four times (1994, 1995, 2001, 2008) and this year's team would like to add another piece of hardware to the trophy case. A top finish would give Gettysburg its second tournament title of the year, following the team's triumph at the Frostburg State University Jim Crawley Tip-Off Tournament.
A well-balanced offense and a stingy defense should make Gettysburg the favorite to take the title. Seven Bullets are averaging better than six points per game and the team is currently the national leader in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 41.5 points per game. The Orange and Blue also rank top 10 in the nation in scoring margin (+24.3) and turnover margin (8.88).
Gettysburg will be led by junior
Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) who is averaging a team-leading 14.1 points per game this season and is a two-time member of the Days Inn All-Tournament Team. Senior
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) was named to the all-tournament team as a freshman and currently ranks second on the team in scoring at 10.4 points per game.
Sophomore
Lauren Dadigan (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) has more than doubled her production from a year ago, ranking third on the team at 7.9 points per game in addition to leading the Centennial Conference in field goal percentage at .591. Classmate
Julie McGrory (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) is the Bullets top producer off the bench 7.6 points per game.
Senior
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), junior
Mary Spicer (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), and sophomore
Sara Kinsley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) are all averaging better than six points an outing, while leading the team in key categories. Drechsler has keyed the defensive effort this season with a conference-leading 4.1 steals per game. Earlier in the year, she set a school record and tied a conference mark with a dozen steals against Bryn Mawr College.
Spicer is the team's top passer, averaging 4.4 assists per game and Kinsley has the team's best numbers on the glass, averaging seven caroms per game, more than half coming on the offensive end.
Despite an apparent edge on paper, Gettysburg will be hard-pressed to avoid a second consecutive 0-2 result at its own tournament. The remaining three teams have been playing well through the first half of the year and any one has the potential to knock the Bullets from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Led by double-double machine
Angela Altemose, Alvernia has won each of its last four games since a 10-point setback to nationally-ranked University of Scranton to start the year. Altemose has averaged 14.6 points and 11 rebounds per game, while also leading the way in steals (3.2 spg) and blocks (1.0 bpg).
Alex Velazquez paces the Crusaders at 15.6 points per game.
Neumann also won its last four before the break and had a date with nationally-ranked Moravian College prior to the Days Inn Tournament. The Knights can put up numbers inside and outside, leading all tournament teams with 40 three-pointers and a 47.9 rebounds per game. Senior
Brittany Whetts is the team's best player, averaging a double-double with 15.9 points and 11 rebounds per game.
After a pair of sub-.500 seasons, Richard Stockton appears to have righted the ship with five wins in its first seven games, including a 12-point win over Neumann to start the year. The Ospreys average nearly 13 steals an outing and have won four of their five games by double-figures. Sophomore center
LaTonya Oliver paves the way with 12 points and eight rebounds per game.
The 2010 Days Inn Tournament gets underway Saturday, Jan. 2, at 6 p.m. when Alvernia and Richard Stockton tip off. Gettysburg will face Neumann in the night's second contest at about 8 p.m. On Sunday, Jan. 3, the consolation and championship will take place at 2 and 4 p.m., respectively, with an awarding of the Sally Musselman Outstanding Player Award and selection of an all-tournament team following directly after the final game. All games will offer both
