LANCASTER, Pa. – Gettysburg College opened with the first eight points and ended on a 46-17 run to close out a school-record tying victory to start the season, beating host Franklin & Marshall College 69-39 in Centennial Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night.
With the win, Gettysburg (7-0, 4-0 CC) ties the best start in school history, first accomplished by the 1999-00 squad. Junior
Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) once again torched Franklin & Marshall (5-2, 2-2 CC), recording her 10th career double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Junior
Mary Spicer (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and senior
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) also hit double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Despite netting the first eight points and leading by 10 (12-2) on a jumper by Fields at 14:50, Gettysburg quickly found itself in a battle as the Diplomats came back with nine of the next 11, pulling to 14-11 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Alexa Barbush at 12:16.
Moser helped push the lead back to seven (18-11) with back-to-back buckets, but Franklin & Marshall charged right back and sliced the deficit to just one (23-22) at 7:48. A 10-0 run by the Bullets squashed the Dips' momentum and helped the visitors head into the break with a comfortable 37-25 lead.
The second period was all orange and blue as Gettysburg put in the first six points and never looked back, extending the lead to as many as 34 (69-35) on a three-pointer by freshman
Kate Knudson (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) at 3:23. The Bullets forced the Diplomats into a dozen turnovers in the period and dominated action the glass with 21 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive end.
Gettysburg has held all of its opponents to less than 40 percent shooting from the field and the trend continued Wednesday night as F&M canned only 37.2 percent. The Bullets owned the glass by a significant margin at 40-23, including 18 on the offensive end that contributed to 20 second-chance points.
Sporting career averages of 19 points and over 10 rebounds per game against the Diplomats coming into Wednesday night, Moser bettered those numbers by shooting 9-of-19 from the floor and 3-of-3 at the free throw line. Spicer turned in a season-high point total on the strength of six field goals, including a pair of three pointers.
Coming off a school record 12 steals against Bryn Mawr College, senior
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) totaled four against the Dips, adding eight points and three assists. Fields and sophomore
Sara Kinsley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) helped the effort on the glass with seven boards a piece, the former adding a team-high four assists.
Beth Holt led the hosts with eight points, while Barbush tossed in seven points and dished out four assists.
Gettysburg plays its final game before the holidays this Saturday, Dec. 12, with a road trip to Ursinus College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
