Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Three different players accounted for Gettysburg's three goals and the 18th-ranked Bullets held York (Pa.) College to five shots in a 3-1 non-conference field hockey win Thursday afternoon at a blustery Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

With the win Gettysburg improved to 3-0 to start the season for the second year in a row. The Spartans fell to 1-2.

It was a 2-1 game at halftime, and that score nearly held up for the duration of the game until junior Alyssa Heimbach (Palm, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) notched her first collegiate goal with 23 seconds left. The Bullets made their one-goal lead stand up by allowing just one York shot in the second half.

Senior Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) scored what held up as the game-winning goal for the Bullets when she broke a 1-1 tie with 11:17 left in the first half.

Gettysburg outshot the Spartans 15-5 for the game.

York seized control of the game early, taking the first three shots. The Spartans broke through on their third shot, when Katie Dawkins rebounded in a loose ball 4:15 into the contest. However, Gettysburg would allow only two shots the rest of the way.

Senior Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) pulled Gettysburg even just over six minutes later, also rebounding home a deflection off the keeper to make it a 1-1 game. It was the 24th career goal for Hearn, who moved into a three-way tie with Beth Curry '88 and Carrie Brown '04 for 10th on Gettysburg's all-time list.

Emala put the Bullets ahead to stay shortly after a Gettysburg corner. After a hit from the top, sophomore Martha Tahsler (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) gained possession on the left wing and crossed the ball to Emala, who slapped home her first goal of the season.

York found itself one and for a short period of time two players down in the second half, when it was charged with four cards, including a pair of yellow cards 2:36 apart early in the stanza. However, the Bullets were unable to take advantage, as Spartan keeper Claire Rekitzke made three saves on four Gettysburg shots during the stretch.

Senior Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./The Calverton School) finished with three saves to earn the win for the Bullets while Rekitzke turned aside nine shots for York.

Gettysburg concludes its season-opening four-game homestand when it hosts No. 14 Christopher Newport University on Saturday at 11 a.m.
