Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) scored a game-high 20 points and notched her 1,000th career point at Gettysburg College, but her effort wasn't enough as McDaniel College handed the 24th-ranked Bullets a 51-48 loss in Centennial Conference women's basketball action inside Bream Gym Wednesday night.
McDaniel (11-4, 10-2 CC) won its 11th-straight game and knocked off its second ranked foe in as many weeks by shooting a blistering 52.2 percent in the second half and holding Gettysburg (13-2, 8-2 CC) off the scoreboard for the final 2:22. The Green Terror beat ninth-ranked Muhlenberg College 72-71 in overtime on Jan. 12.
Gettysburg marched into the locker room with a slim 21-19 advantage and added to the lead at the start of the second period as Fields led the way with nine of the team's first 13 points. At 12:07, she ripped down an offensive rebound and converted the putback to join the 1,000-point club and give the Bullets a 34-31 lead. She became the 12th player in school history to reach the mark and second this season, joining junior
Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing).
Despite Fields' hot shooting, McDaniel came right back with an 8-0 run, including six points from Ali Moreland, to take their largest lead of the game 39-34 at the midpoint of the final stanza. The Green Terror held onto the lead for almost seven minutes until just before the three-minute mark when sophomore
Sara Kinsley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) converted on a nifty post move and Fields followed up with a pair of clutch free throws, retaking the lead for the hosts 48-47 with 2:22 left in regulation.
Cara Thompson came up with the go-ahead bucket for the visitors on a backdoor cut at 1:06. Gettysburg turned to the hot hand on its next possession and Fields lifted a three from the wing, but her shot hit the side of the rim and bounded out-of-bounds. The Bullets were forced to foul and eventually sent Moreland to the line where she missed the front end of a one-and-one. On the ensuing possession, sophomore
Julie McGrory (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) made a drive to the goal with her lay-up going wide of the mark. Ashley Lyles took down the carom and after being fouled, staked the Terror to the final margin by nailing two free throws with four seconds on the clock. The host's last-ditch effort at tying the game failed as junior
Mary Spicer's (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) heave from just inside halfcourt was well short of the mark.
McDaniel took the lead to start the game before a steady Bullets' attack pulled away for an eight-point advantage (21-13) on a lay-up by Moser at 3:59. After missing 11-straight shots at one point in the opening half, the Green Terror tallied the final six of the period to cut the halftime deficit to two.
McDaniel finally solved the riddle of the Gettysburg defense as the visitors were the first squad to shoot above 40 percent this season. The Green Terror connected on 20-of-47 shots from the field for a clip of just over 42 percent. McDaniel held a 34-33 advantage on the glass, but the Bullets were able to keep things close by scoring 23 points off 22 Terror turnovers.
Fields finished 8-fo-15 from the field with seven rebounds and two steals. Moser tallied nine points and a game-high eight caroms, including five on the offensive end. Kinsley led the bench with eight points, five boards, and four blocked shots.
Katelyn Fischer led McDaniel with 13 points and Lyles finished with an even dozen. Lyles also grabbed six rebounds and was a force on the defensive end with four blocks. Moreland posted seven points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Gettysburg will try to end its two-game slide on Saturday, Jan. 23, when it visits Swarthmore College (7-8, 4-6 CC) for a 2 p.m. match up. The Bullets edged the Garnet 51-48 on Jan. 6.
