SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sophomore
Sara Kinsley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) scored all of 24th-ranked Gettysburg College's points in overtime to lead the team to a 60-57 come-from-behind victory at Swarthmore College in Centennial Conference women's hoops action Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (14-2, 9-2 CC) avoided a three-game losing streak by erasing an 11-point second-half deficit against Swarthmore (7-9, 4-7 CC). Kinsley tallied eight points in the extra period and finished with a career-high 16 points in the victory, while senior
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) led the Bullets with 17 points, including 10 in the second half.
After out-scoring the Garnet 11-2 to end regulation, the Bullets maintained momentum in overtime by turning up the defensive pressure and dumping the ball into Kinsley on offense. Gettysburg forced Swarthmore into five turnovers in the extra session, while Kinsley provided all of the offense with a pair of lay-ups and four free throws. Her biggest shots came with 54 ticks left as she calmly knocked down both charity-stripe attempts to push the Bullets ahead 60-54.
Genny Pezzola gave the Garnet a chance by knocking down a three-pointer on their next possession and following a turnover by the Bullets, she fired up another attempt from deep looking to force a second overtime. The shot missed everything and the ensuing putback came after the buzzer, giving the visitors the win.
After dropping its last two contests by a combined four points, Gettysburg was forced into another battle in the early going on Saturday. A Kinsley lay-up put an 18-18 tie on the scoreboard at 8:13 in the opening period before Swarthmore reeled off the next 10 points.
The Garnet were up by five at the break and they took their largest lead of the night early in the second stanza as Ceylan Bodur scored the first six points to stake the team to a 34-23 advantage at 17:16 . Gettysburg's deficit never dipped below five for almost 15 minutes and stood at nine (50-41) with 4:30 to play in regulation.
Sophomore
Julie McGrory (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) sparked the visitors with a pair of three-pointers and Fields and Kinsley each added lay-ups to knot the game at 51 with 1:07 left. Bodur put the Garnet ahead with a free throw, but after making a nice defensive play by blocking a shot by Fields, she committed a turnover to hand the ball back to the visitors. Despite an off-shooting day from the field, the Bullets turned to junior
Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) who drove to the bucket and drew a foul. She missed the first free throw, but connected on the second to force another tie. A desperation heave by Stockbower as time expired was off the mark, leading to the extra period.
Swarthmore owned the glass 50-42, but half of Gettysburg's caroms came on the offensive end. The Bullets forced the Garnet into 31 turnovers leading to 23 points and the visitors out-scored the hosts 30-16 in the paint.
Kinsley finished 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-8 from the free throw line en route to topping her previous personal best by four points. Fields finished 7-of-15 from the field with a trio of three-pointers and McGrory posted 10 points off the bench.
Moser and senior
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) combined for just 4-of-27 from the field, but the duo was a force to reckon with on the defensive end, combining for 11 steals.
Bodur led Swarthmore with 17 points and added 10 boards. Stockbower and Pezzola each added 10 points, the former ripping down a game-high 17 boards.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 27, with another Centennial road trip to Dickinson College at 6 p.m.
