CARLISLE, Pa. – Junior
Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) picked an opportune time to break out of a rare shooting slump, scoring 14 of her game-high 16 points in the second half, including the game's final four, as Gettysburg College snuck by Dickinson College 56-54 in Centennial Conference women's basketball action Wednesday night.
Moser, who had been held below double-figures in back-to-back games for the first time in her career, finished 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line to lead Gettysburg (15-2, 10-2 CC). The Bullets also received another big offensive outing from sophomore
Sara Kinsley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) who finished with 15 points, one shy of her personal best set four days ago in an overtime win at Swarthmore College.
With each of its previous three games coming down to the wire, Gettysburg was put to the test yet again as Dickinson overcame a 12-1 deficit with a 20-5 run and took a 21-17 lead at 4:18 in the opening period. The Bullets answered back with eight-straight points, four from Kinsley alone, and entered the break with a 27-24 advantage.
After finishing just 1-of-4 from the field in the opening half, Moser went to work in the second half and nearly kept the Red Devils at bay on her own. Three times in the final period she tied the game, the last time at 54-54 following a pair of free throws with 2:29 to play.
Gettysburg's next offensive possession resulted in a missed shot, but the Bullets managed to procure one of their game-high 17 offensive rebounds. The ball eventually found its way back to Moser who converted the go-ahead shot with 1:10 left.
Dickinson had its chances to tie the game in the final minute. A lay-up by Alesha Sisco was blocked away by Moser, but the visitor's handed the ball right back to the hosts with a turnover with 19 seconds left. Gettysburg's defense stepped up to the challenge and forced an off-balance shot from the baseline that bounced off the rim. Both teams were scrambling for the ball as the buzzer went off.
Gettysburg canned less than 40 percent of its attempts from the field, but made the most of second-chance opportunities and out-scored Dickinson 15-2 in that area. With Moser and Kinsley anchoring the frontcourt, the Bullets also won the battle in the paint 32-22.
Junior
Mary Spicer (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and sophomore
Lauren Dadigan (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each netted seven points for the Orange and Blue, with Spicer adding a game-high six assists, five rebounds, and three steals.
Gettysburg's win marred an otherwise outstanding performance from Carole Dempsey, who led Dickinson with 16 points and nine rebounds. She was 4-of-7 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 at the charity stripe. Alesha Sisco added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Brooke Muller posted 10 points.
Gettysburg returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 30, with a home date inside Bream Gym with Washington (Md.) College at 2 p.m.
