Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) broke Gettysburg College's career steals record and the Bullets cruised to a 77-68 victory over Washington (Md.) College in Centennial Conference women's basketball action inside Bream Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Drechsler became the program's all-time leader in steals with her fourth theft of the opening period at 1:30, giving her one more than 1998 graduate Jen Dravis. Drechsler finished with five thefts in the game and now as 205 for her career. Gettysburg (16-2, 11-2 CC) was led in the scoring column by junior Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) who tied a season high with 25 tallies, while sophomore Julie McGrory (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) notched a career mark with 20 points.

Washington (7-12, 5-9 CC) started hot, knocking down six of its first 11 shot attempts and taking a 15-8 lead following a Sally O'Donnell lay-up at 12:57. The Shorewomen continued to hold the upper-hand until the mid-point of the period when a lay-up by Drechsler and back-to-back free throws by McGrory put the hosts in front 21-20 with 9:28 remaining before the break.

A pair of Julie Sherwood free throws kept Washington within a bucket (27-25) with under seven minutes on the clock, but Gettysburg answered with one of its biggest runs of the year, netting each of the next 17 points. McGrory led the way with 11 points during the run, including three three-point plays, two coming the old-fashioned way.

Gettysburg went into the break with a 50-30 lead, marking the Bullets' first 50-point half since the team dropped 53 in the first half against Haverford College on Jan. 13, 2005.

The Orange and Blue held the early momentum in the final period and jumped in front by 33 (67-34) on a three-pointer by McGrory at 14:15. That shot capped a 40-9 run over a 12-minute span by the home team.

Gettysburg maintained a 20-point lead well into the final minutes of the game before Washington closed with a 19-4 run.

After shooting just 54.5 percent from the free throw line in its previous five games combined, Gettysburg knocked down all but two of 21 attempts (90.5 percent) from the charity stripe against Washington. The hosts also dominated the glass 41-30 and posted 18 steals.

Moser paced the team with her 19th career 20-point effort and her sixth this season. She finished 11-for-18 from the field and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Moser also canned her second three-pointer in as many attempts this season and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Not to be out-done, McGrory notched her first 20-point game with 5-of-9 shooting from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 effort at the charity stripe.

Also for Gettysburg, sophomore Sara Kinsley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) finished 4-of-5 from the field for eight points, adding six boards and two blocked shots. Sophomore Lauren Dadigan (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) tallied seven points and senior Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) corralled seven rebounds.

Meghan Tait led Washington with 17 points and O'Donnell finished with 16 tallies on the strength of four three-pointers. Erin Kile just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Gettysburg embarks on a three-game, six-day swing through the CC this week, beginning with a road trip to Haverford College on Monday, Feb. 1. Game time is 6 p.m.
