Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's basketball team shot a season-low 31.1 percent and was out-rebounded 42-38, and yet the Bullets found the will to win, holding visiting Swarthmore College scoreless over the final 2:44 to pull out a 51-48 victory in Centennial Conference action Wednesday night.

Junior Mary Spicer (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) led Gettysburg (11-0, 6-0 CC) with 14 points and a season-high eight rebounds, while classmate Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) turned in a dozen points and seven rebounds. The Bullets have now won 12-straight games dating back to last season's finale, marking the fourth-longest streak in school history.

The Orange and Blue had basically run through their first five conference opponents, averaging better than 25 points per game than the opposition, but Swarthmore (4-7, 1-5 CC) came out undaunted and accounted for the game's first five points. The Garnet held as much as a six-point lead in the early going, including 15-9 following a Lisa Schumacher lay-up at 13:08.

Gettysburg erased the deficit quickly, utilizing a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 19-15 advantage just before the midway point of the first half. The advantage grew to nine (31-22) following a pair of free throws by Moser at 1:35, but a lay-up by Kathryn Stockbower cut the lead to 31-24 heading into halftime.

Swarthmore chipped away at the deficit early in the final period and trailed by just two (37-35) following a three-pointer by Pamela Costello at 15:08. Again the Bullets answered, turning in seven quick points to earn their largest lead of the night at 45-35 with 11:55 on the clock.

The lead was short lived as the Garnet came storming back with 11 unanswered points, capped by a three-pointer by Genny Pezzola which gave the visitors a 46-45 lead at 4:21. Moser retaliated on Gettysburg's next possession, knocking down a jumper to regain the advantage, and Spicer followed shortly thereafter by swishing a jumper from the top of the key to put the Bullets up 49-46 with under three minutes to play.

Stockbower, who finished with a game-high 15 points and 14 rebounds, pulled her team back to within one with a lay-up 14 seconds later, but that would be the Garnet's final bucket of the game. Senior Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) converted a runner in the lane to spot Gettysburg a 51-48 lead at 1:28 and the Garnet missed their final seven shots, including a potential game-tying three-pointer by Eliza Polli with two ticks left.

Gettysburg turned in its worst shooting night of the season, canning just 19-of-61 attempts from the floor and just 1-of-10 from long range. However, the Bullets forced Swarthmore into 28 turnovers which led directly to 20 points.

Spicer finished 5-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Moser was also perfect in four trips to the charity stripe and she added four assists and three steals. Drechsler finished with seven points and sophomore Julie McGrory (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) led the bench with six points and three steals.

Stockbower never left the floor for the Garnet, playing all 40 minutes and finishing 7-of-16 from the field. Ceylan Bodur tallied 11 points, while Summer Miller-Walfish posted five points, six boards, and five blocked shots.

Gettysburg returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 9, with a doubleheader at Washington (Md.) College. The women take the floor at 2 p.m. with the men's game following at about 4 p.m.
