GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Defender
Alyssa Heimbach turned in a Senior Day to remember, posting a career-high five points on two goals and one assist as the Gettysburg College field hockey team defeated Muhlenberg College 4-0 in Centennial Conference action Friday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
With the win, the Bullets (9-8, 7-3 CC) clinched fourth place in the conference standings and will host a first-round playoff game on Wednesday. Gettysburg will take on either Washington College or McDaniel College, pending the results of Saturday's games.
Heimbach was one of five Gettysburg seniors honored before the game.
Muhlenberg closed the season at 2-14 and 2-8 in conference play.
Junior
Sarah Cole gave the Bullets on the scoring they would need when she scored with 19:17 left in the opening half, taking a long pass from near midfield and dribbling into the circle before rolling in her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Gettysburg led just 1-0 at halftime despite outshooting the Mules 12-0 in the opening stanza.
It was still a one-goal game over 15 minutes into the second half before Heimbach sparked the Bullets. Following a corner, Heimbach collected a rebound and fired a shot that was tipped in by freshman
Kelly Spieker to make it 2-0 with 19:16 left in the game.
Heimbach continued her assault late in the game, scoring twice over a 1:53 span to help clinch the Bullets victory. With 7:16 left, she took a centering pass from senior
Nicole Meredyth and blasted a shot into the left side of the cage. Less than two minutes later, she accepted a corner pass from junior
Martha Tahsler, took one dribble, and rifled in another well-struck ball to set the final score.
It was the second career two-goal game for Heimbach, who also scored twice in a win over Haverford last season.
Sophomore
Megan Feeg made three saves to pick up her second consecutive shutout and her fourth of the season. Senior
Laura McIntyre helped preserve the clean sheet late in the game with a defensive save, as she tied the single-season school record of six previously set by Michelle Marsnick in 2005 and Morgan Cromwell in 2004.
Kristen Dornenburg stopped 19 shots for the Mules, who were outshot 36-5. The Bullets also held a 19-5 advantage in corners.
