GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Kristen Wille scored the game-winning goal with 3:58 left in overtime and Washington College defeated Gettysburg 2-1 in the first round of the Centennial Conference field hockey tournament Wednesday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
With the win, the fifth-seeded Shorewomen (9-9) advance to the tournament semifinals, where they will take on the top-seeded and third-ranked Ursinus College on Saturday. Second-seeded Johns Hopkins University and third-seeded Haverford College will meet in the other semifinal.
For the second time this season, Gettysburg (9-9) outshot Washington by a wide margin and nearly doubled up Washington with a 30-16 advantage. However, senior goalie Shannon Davis made 12 saves against the Bullets for the second time this season. In addition, senior defender Brittany Palasik made two defensive saves, pushing her Centennial Conference single-season record to 21.
When the two teams met earlier this year, the Shorewomen claimed a 3-1 decision despite being outshot 21-11.
Washington took the early lead when Hillary Kane took a pass from Gussie Reilly and pushed in a loose ball in front of the cage with 20:51 left in the opening half. It would remain a 1-0 game for the rest of the period, although the Bullets held a 14-6 shot advantage in the opening half.
Gettysburg, the tournament's fourth seed, was awarded a penalty stroke with 10:12 left in regulation following a pair of Bullet shots in front, and senior
Alyssa Heimbach cashed in, lifting a shot into the upper-left part of the cage to make it a 1-1 game. The Bullets put two more shots on goal over the rest of regulation but Davis turned aside both.
The Bullets had an excellent scoring opportunity four minutes into overtime, when rules called for each team to remove four players from the field for 7-on-7 play. After Gettysburg was awarded three consecutive corners, the Bullets had three straight shots, two of which were saved by Davis.
Sophomore goalie
Megan Feeg made two of her four saves over a two-and-a-half minute stretch late in overtime before Wille's game-winner. The goal was set up after a shot by Emily Trees from the right wing was deflected by Feeg to her right, where Willie pounced on the loose ball and flicked it into the back of the cage for her fifth tally of the season.
Senior
Laura McIntyre made her seventh defensive save of the year early in the second half to finish with a Gettysburg single-season record.
