HAVERFORD, Pa. – Sophomore
Julie McGrory (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) scored 20 points for the second consecutive game and Gettysburg College overcame a slow start to beat host Haverford College 54-38 in Centennial Conference women's hoops action Monday night.
McGrory turned in a career night for Gettysburg (17-2, 12-2 CC) tying a personal best for points set last game against Washington (Md.) College and setting career marks for field goals (8), field goals attempted (15), rebounds (9), steals (5), and minutes played (37). After being held scoreless in the opening period, junior
Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) tossed in 14 second-half points, while senior
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) ripped down a season-high 12 rebounds.
After hitting three of their first five shots, the Bullets went without a field goal for over seven minutes. During that time, Haverford (5-13, 3-11 CC) used a pair of threes by Nina Voith and Victoria Sobocinski to jump ahead 12-8. McGrory ended the drought with a jumper at 9:11, but back-to-back buckets by Sobocinski and Meredith Schoyer gave the hosts their largest lead at 16-10 with 6:29 remaining in the opening half.
Gettysburg, which went on a 17-0 run late in the first half of its most recent win over Washington, tallied the game's next 13 points, ending the opening period with 11-straight tallies and turning in the first two of the last stanza to take a 24-16 advantage.
The Fords dropped the deficit to five on a Voith three-pointer at 12:21, but Fields answered back 17 seconds later with her only field goal from distance to regain the eight-point edge. Haverford was unable to cut the deficit to less than six the rest of the way.
Gettysburg dominated action on the glass, out-rebounding Haverford 46-29 in the game, including tying a season-high with 23 offensive caroms. After making just over a quarter of their shots in the first period, the Bullets rebounded with 42 percent shooting in the final stanza.
Moser picked up two quick fouls and was forced to watch most of the first-half action from the bench. She bounced back in the second half, however, canning 6-of-13 shots and hitting a pair of free throws. She also grabbed seven offensive rebounds as part of her eight-rebound night.
Senior
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) finished with four field goals and three free throws for 11 points, while adding a game-high five assists and two steals. Sophomore
Sara Kinsley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) added to the action on the glass with nine rebounds and she blocked a trio of shots.
Voith finished with 14 points on the strength of three three-pointers, while Dominque Meeks added 11 points.
