Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. – In a tale of two halves, the Gettysburg College women's basketball team staged another thrilling comeback as Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) showed off for the hometown crowd with 16 of her game-high 19 points in the second half to lead the Bullets to a 66-62 victory at Johns Hopkins University Wednesday night in Goldfarb Gym.

Fields finished 6-of-10 from the field with all but one of those field goals coming in the final period. Gettysburg (18-2, 13-2 CC) also received 15 points apiece from senior Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and junior Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing), while Sara Kinsley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) chipped in with 10 tallies off the bench.

Gettysburg is off to the second-best start through 20 games in school history and it clinched a berth in the CC Tournament later this month, but it didn't appear headed in that direction through the first 20 minutes of play. Johns Hopkins (11-8, 9-6 CC) used its size to bully the Bullets on the boards and owned a 24-9 advantage on the glass in the opening period. An Anastasia Wynn three-pointer just before the buzzer gave the Blue Jays a 34-23 lead at the break.

With an 11-point come-from-behind win at Swarthmore College a few weeks ago already in its back pocket, the Orange and Blue began the second half with an 8-0 spurt to pull to 34-31 in less than two minutes. Johns Hopkins continued to hold the advantage, however, eventually regaining a 10-point cushion (44-34) on a Siobhan Callanan trey at 13:55.

Moser sparked Gettysburg with her third three-pointer in as many tries this season, leading to a 13-2 run capped by four-straight points by Fields which gave the visitors a 47-46 lead with 8:49 left. The two teams would exchange the lead 13 times in the final eight minutes with the Bullets taking it for the final time on a Moser lay-up with 1:06 on the clock.

The Blue Jays missed their next four field goals until a three-pointer with four seconds left cut the lead to 64-62. Gettysburg ensured the victory by knocking in six free throw attempts in the final minute with Moser sealing the decision with a pair with two ticks left.

After hitting just under 35 percent of its field goal tries in the first half, Gettysburg lit the hardwood for 63.2 percent in the final period, knocking down 12-of-19 attempts, including all but one of four shots from beyond the arc. The Bullets also aided their cause with a season-high 20 made free throws in 23 attempts, including going 16-of-19 in the final stanza.

The win was doubly sweet for Gettysburg, which clinched a spot in the CC Tournament one year removed from missing the playoffs because of a tiebreaker in the conference rule book. The Bullets remained in a tie with Muhlenberg College (16-3, 13-2 CC) for second place in the standings, just one-half game behind McDaniel College (16-4, 14-2 CC).

Fields added a team-high seven rebounds and was 5-of-6 from the charity stripe for Gettysburg. Drechsler finished with six rebounds, six assists, and seven made free throws, while Moser added six boards and was perfect in six trips to the line. Sophomore Julie McGrory (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) tallied seven points, five rebounds, and five assists.

Lyndsay Burton tallied a double-double for Hopkins, turning in 15 points and a dozen rebounds. Chantel Mattiola posted 13 points and five assists and Callanan finished with 11 tallies.

Gettysburg caps a three-game week at home against Ursinus College (9-11, 6-9 CC) on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 4 p.m.
