Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior defender
Alyssa Heimbach scored one goal and passed out one assist to the lead the 20th-ranked Gettysburg College field hockey team to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Cabrini College in the Bullets home opener at a sunny Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Gettysburg (2-1), which won its sixth straight home opener, never trailed and for the second game in a row outshot its opponent by a wide margin. After outshooting York (Pa.) College 17-3 in a 3-1 win on Tuesday, the Bullets owned a 28-5 advantage against Cabrini (1-2). However, Caitlin Donahue kept it close for the Cavaliers, making 13 saves.
The win marked career victory number No. 95 for Bullets head coach
Barb Jordan.
Despite outshooting Cabrini 15-1 in the opening half, Gettysburg carried just a 1-0 lead into the locker room, as neither side managed to score until junior
Martha Tahsler struck with 6:00 on the clock. After striking a corner pass to Heimbach at the top of the circle, Tahsler drifted to the left post, where she took a feed from Heimbach and drilled in her first goal of the season and second of her career.
The Bullets continued to pepper Donahue with shots in the second half, but it was still a 1-0 game before Heimbach gave her team some breathing room with 12:55 left. Heimbach took a corner pass from sophomore
Katie Savage and sent home a low blast from just inside the circle for her first goal of the year.
The Cavaliers answered with 9:46 remaining, when Colleen Anastasi got behind Bullets goalie
Megan Feeg on a scramble and slipped in a shot to make it a 2-1 game. However, the Bullets set the final score when junior
Sarah Cole found paydirt. After having her initial shot saved, Cole tracked down the loose ball behind Donahue before tapping in her team-leading third goal of the year.
Feeg finished with three saves for Gettysburg, which also held a 13-4 edge in corners.
The Bullets continue their four-game homestand on Tuesday, when they take on Catholic University at 4:30 p.m. in another non-conference outing.
