GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Nearly 90 percent of the living members of the 1964 Gettysburg College football team that won the school's first and only Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) University Division title will return to campus this weekend for the team's first reunion.
The team will be honored at halftime of the Bullets' home opener against Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, and also enjoy a reception hosted by College President
Janet Morgan Riggs '77, followed by a banquet on campus.
The 1964 team is the only one in school history to beat Bucknell, Delaware, Lafayette and Lehigh in the same season, en route to a 7-2 overall record, and 5-1 in the MAC. The team outscored its opponents 248-131 and also recorded wins over Hofstra, Muhlenberg and Juniata.
Thirty-five of the 40 surviving members of the team are returning for the weekend, including the team's quarterback,
Jimmy Ward '66, who played in the NFL for the Baltimore Colts (as Johnny Unitas' backup) and Philadelphia Eagles before a knee injury ended his career. Three members of the team –
Pat Noonan '65,
Barry Shaw '65 and
Dick Shirk '67 – served the College as members of the Board of Trustees.
