GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Zach Mallard has been named defensive coordinator on the Gettysburg football staff, head coach
Michael Green announced on Monday.
Mallard is Green's first hire as he puts together his new staff for the 2026 season.
Hired on Jan. 13 as the Bullets' 27th head football coach, Green brings Mallard on board to head up his defensive staff.
"We are excited to have Coach Mallard join our football program as the defensive coordinator," Green said. "He is a tremendous recruiter, great defensive mind and will be a strong mentor for our student-athletes. I look forward to working alongside Zach as we build the new era of Bullet Football!"
Mallard comes to Gettysburg after spending the last two seasons in the same role at St. Lawrence. A veteran coach on the defensive side of the ball, Mallard has coached at every level of football.
"I am very excited for the privilege to be the new Defensive Coordinator at Gettysburg College and join Coach Green's first staff here," Mallard said. "I want to thank Coach Green and the rest of the administration for such a tremendous opportunity. I am fired up to be a Bullet and I cannot be more excited to get to work!"
As defensive coordinator with the Saints, he also had charge over the defensive backs in 2024 and coached the linebackers and safeties last season. The defensive play caller, his defense led the Liberty League with 23 sacks in a nine-game schedule in 2024. The unit was also second in the conference in pass defense, allowing just 157.0 yards per game through the air. In 2025, the defense was second in the league in forced fumbles and third in fumble recoveries.
In two years, his St. Lawrence defenders earned six All-Liberty League honors, including two-time second-team linebacker Ryan Surhoff.
Prior to his time in Canton, Mallard was the assistant defensive backs coach at Division I Auburn after four seasons at Huntingdon College. He served as defensive backs coach and defensive pass game coordinator there from 2019-23 while also serving as academic coordinator and strength and conditioning intern. He coached the entire secondary, including running position meetings and daily practice plans for safeties and corners. He helped the Hawks to four USA South championships and the NCAA tournament in 2019, 2021 and 2022 and had six first- or second-team all-conference defensive backs.
He coached three all-conference selections, including two first-team defensive backs, and second-team al-region corner in 2022. In 2021, he mentored Fred Flavors to All-America honors at two positions (first-team special teams and second-team corner) in addition to three all-conference defensive backs. That season, one of his corners lead Division III in pass breakups and rank third in blocked kicks and fourth passes defended.
In August 2022, Mallard was selected as the Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Fellow for the Los Angeles Chargers, where he assisted the entire defensive staff, specifically the defensive backs, during all practice and walk through-related activities during training camp.
He started his coaching career at Greensboro, coaching the defensive backs from 2017-18. He also served as the academic coordinator in Greensboro. While there, he coached a first-team all-conference safety.
Gettysburg opens the 2026 season at Juniata on Sept. 5.
