GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Sarah Cole celebrated Senior Day in style, scoring the game-winning goal with 6:22 left as the as the Bullets defeated Muhlenberg College 3-2 in Centennial Conference field hockey action at a blustery Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium Friday afternoon during Homecoming and Family Weekend.
Gettysburg's five seniors –
Megan Bernstein,
Molly Burton, Cole,
Carey Davis, and
Martha Tahsler – were honored in a brief ceremony before the start of the game.
Cole's game-winner came less than a minute after Muhlenberg had tied the game. Amidst a scrum on a loose ball in front, Cole poked the ball in from point-blank range following a defensive save.
Sophomore
Liz Baron scored both of Gettysburg's first two goals while junior
Megan Feeg made five saves for the Bullets (7-7, 5-3 CC), who won their fourth straight Centennial Conference game.
Freshman Kayleigh Thies scored both goals for Muhlenberg (4-11, 2-7 CC) while junior Kristen Dornenburg made five saves.
Baron scored both of the game's first two goals as the Bullets led from start to finish. She dribbled into the left side of the circle before sending home a shot from five yards out with 19:34 left in the opening half, then rebounded her own missed shot and slipped in a baseline shot into a wide-open cage from the left side to make it 2-0 with 11:28 on the clock.
It was the second multi-goal game of the season for Baron.
Thies cut the lead half with 4:05 remaining in the half, gliding in from the top and firing a shot from 10 yards out and into the right side of the cage.
The Bullets outshot the Mules 11-5 in the opening period and held an 11-2 advantage in corners.
Thies pulled her team even with 7:09 remaining, taking a corner pass from junior Devon Barber and slapping home a well-struck ball from the top of the circle, setting up Cole's game-winner.
Gettysburg finished with advantages in shots (19-10) and corners (20-8).
The Bullets return to the field on Wednesday, when they visit fourth-ranked Franklin & Marshall College at 7:30 p.m. in a Centennial Conference affair.
