ARLINGTON, Va. – Despite career highs of 24 points and 17 rebounds from senior
Sara Kinsley, the Gettysburg College women's basketball team came up short of a win in the opening game of the season as Manhattanville College held off a late charge to win 61-54 in the opening game of the Marymount University Tip-Off Tournament.
Gettysburg (0-1) used a 20-4 run to chop a 19-point second-half deficit down to just three (57-54) with only 52 seconds to play. Manhattanville (1-1), which took fourth-ranked William Paterson to double overtime on Tuesday, forced the Bullets to foul and the Valiants were good at the charity stripe as Courtney Turner accounted for four free throws in the final 27 seconds. Meanwhile, Gettysburg was off target on its final two attempts.
The two teams were even in the early part of the contest with Gettysburg jumping ahead 11-10 seven minutes in. That would be the Bullets' last lead of the day as Manhattanville went off on a 16-0 run to take a 26-11 advantage with eight minutes remaining in the first half.
Freshman
Taylor Flatau picked up her first collegiate points on a pair of free throws with three seconds left to pull Gettysburg to 35-22 at the break.
The Valiants maintained the upperhand in the second half and steadily built the lead to 19 (54-35) on a free throw by Kelli Hyjek at 8:08. But the Bullets got their second wind and ran off the next 11 points capped by back-to-back three pointers by sophomore
Alyssa Isler that made it 54-46 with 5:34 to play.
Kinsley pulled the Bullets to 57-53 with a lay-up at the two-minute mark and after a missed shot and turnover by the Valiants, junior
Alyssa Oursler (Middletown, Md./Middletown) grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled with 52 seconds left. Her first free throw would be Gettysburg's final point before the buzzer.
Gettysburg shot 34.7 percent from the field (17-for-49), slightly better than Manhattanville's 29-percent clip. The Valiants took advantage of 28 Bullet turnovers to score 23 points. ettysburg finished 18-of-26 from the free throw line, while Manhattanville was 21-of-31.
Kinsley finished 10-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from the floor. She topped her previous career scoring high by three and her rebounding high by five. She also added five blocked shots.
Isler finished with seven points for the Bullets, while Oursler posted six points, six boards, two blocks, and two steals. Senior
Lauren Dadigan grabbed seven boards and scored five points.
Taylor Wilson led Manhattanville with 17 points. Turner recorded a dozen of her 16 points at the charity tripe, while Jen McSharar contributed ine points and seven rebounds.
Gettysburg will play the loser between Lynchburg College and host Marymount on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m.
