GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College field hockey team earned one of the biggest wins in program history, defeating eighth-ranked Ursinus College 4-1 in its Centennial Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
The Bullets (5-1, 1-0 CC) snapped a 33-game losing streak to Ursinus, topping the Bears for the first time since a 4-2 victory in 1960. Ursinus (2-2, 0-1 CC), which once competed in Division I in field hockey, has won the last eight Centennial Conference titles.
Senior
Kelly Madden scored a career-high two goals for Gettysburg while junior
Liz Baron added a goal and an assist. Senior
Megan Feeg made six saves.
“We knew Ursinus' tradition, and we knew what a strong team they are,” said Gettysburg Head Coach
Barb Jordan. “We knew that the only way we would be able to do it is if we played together as a team and stayed composed from start to finish, with every single player doing what they could individually to make a difference on the field. I thought they did that – I thought they played really strong against a very good team, so we're real happy with the outcome.”
Junior
Hayward Sawers gave the Bullets a 1-0 lead with 21:37 left in the first half. After injecting a corner pass, she found her way to the left post, where she tipped in a blast off the stick of Baron.
With just over 10 minutes left in the opening half the Bullets were awarded a corner, and Sawers sent the ball to Baron at the top of the circle, where she fed a pass to junior
Erica Barbuto on the left flank. Barbuto slid the ball down to Madden, who sent home a one-timer from seven yards out for her first goal of the year to make it 2-0.
Gettysburg received another corner with 17 seconds left, and after a defensive save by Ursinus' Jordan Miller, the Bullets were awarded a penalty stroke with no time on the clock. Baron capitalized, drilling in her first career penalty-stroke goal to give the hosts a 3-0 lead at the break.
The Bears pulled to within two early in the second half, when Abby Wood took a pass from Rachel Pandl and snuck in a shot from the left doorstep with 30:39 showing on the clock. But the Bullets were quick to answer, scoring on a rebound four minutes later. After a Sawers shot was deflected and saved by Ursinus keeper Brittany Dolson, Madden rebounded in the shot on a scramble in front to make it 4-1 and set the final score.
Both teams finished with 15 shots while Gettysburg held a 14-9 advantage in corners.
Dolson finished with four saves for Ursinus.
Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Wednesday, when it visits Dickinson College at 4 p.m. in another Centennial Conference affair.
