GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior receiver
Aden Twer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) became just the second Bullet to reach 2,000 career receiving yards, but the Gettysburg College football team dropped a 34-16 Centennial Conference (CC) decision to 12th-ranked and undefeated Johns Hopkins University Saturday afternoon in front of a large Family Weekend crowd at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Twer joined Chris Notarfrancesco '95 on Gettysburg's 2,000-yard receiving club and finished the game with five catches for 65 yards. Notarfrancesco finished with 2,114 yards from 1992-94.
Junior quarterback
Zach Miller (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) posted his second career 300-yard passing game for Gettysburg (3-4, 2-4 CC), going 23-for-38 for 302 yards and one touchdown while senior wing
Tommy LeNoir (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) finished with 233 all-purpose yards. Freshman linebacker
Chris Miller (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) made 19 tackles and forced a pair of fumbles while sophomore linebacker
Kodie McNamara (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) added 18 stops.
Brandon Cherry (176 yards) and Stuart Walters (130 yards) led a 362-yard rushing attack for the Blue Jays (7-0, 6-0 CC) while Dan Wodicka (eight catches, 76 yards) became the Centennial Conference career receptions leader with his final catch of the game, giving him 242. Robbie Matey completed 23-of-30 passes for 206 yards for Hopkins while Jared Beekman made nine catches for 82 yards.
The game featured a combined 1,050 yards of offense, with the Blue Jays outgaining the Bullets 574-476. Gettysburg accumulated more total yards and passing yards against Johns Hopkins than any other team this season.
The Bullets tied a season-high with four turnovers, which led to 10 late points for Hopkins.
Gettysburg came up with a stop on Hopkins' first three possessions, forcing a pair of punts sandwiched around a fumble recovery. On their second drive of the game, the Blue Jays drove 63 yards on 11 plays before
Chris Miller stripped the ball from Cherry, and sophomore safety
Michael Kornegay (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) pounced on it at the Bullet-1 with 7:19 left in the first quarter. Gettysburg would go three-and-out but on its following possession, junior
Matt Perkins (Whitehouse Station, N.Y./Hunterdon Central) booted a career-long 38-yard field goal to give the Bullets a 3-0 lead with 13:33 left in the first half.
Hopkins would score a touchdown on its final two full possessions of the half, however, to lead 14-3 at the intermission. Matey put the Blue Jays on the scoreboard with a 2-yard touchdown run, giving his team a 7-3 lead with 8:54 on the clock. The Bullets threatened on the ensuing drive, going 72 yards to the Hopkins-3, but Perkins had his 20-yard field-goal attempt blocked. The Jays responded with a 95-yard drive that was capped by a 9-yard TD run by Cherry with 47 seconds left.
Gettysburg fumbled on the opening drive of the second half, then again on the ensuing punt. However, the Blue Jays failed to convert either turnover into points.
The Bullets came up with their second takeaway deep in their own territory when
Chris Miller came up with his third forced fumble in two games, knocking the ball out of the hands of Beekman. Junior defensive end
A.J. Hill (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) recovered at the Gettysburg-2 but the Bullets were eventually forced to punt, and the Blue Jays would score on a 54-yard touchdown run by Stuart Walters that made it 21-3 with 6:48 to go in third quarter.
Gettysburg pulled to within 11 when junior
Eddie Hutchins (Weston, Conn./Weston) ran for an 8-yard touchdown with 4:18 left in the quarter. The Bullets had a chance to reduce the deficit even more after forcing a punt, but on the first play of their next drive
Zach Miller had a pass intercepted by John Arena, who returned it 11 yards to the Gettysburg-12. Four plays later, Nick Campbell kicked a 24-yard field goal to give the visitors a 24-10 advantage with 14:14 left in the game.
Campbell would add a 28-yard field goal with 7:49 remaining before Hopkins came up with their fourth and final takeaway when
Zach Miller was hit from behind on a sack. Matthew Connery jarred the ball loose, and it was recovered by Brannock Furey at the Blue Jay-17. Hopkins then drove 83 yards on eight plays before JD Abbott scored from 1 yard out to extend the lead to 34-10 with 2:10 to play.
Zach Miller went 5-for-6 for 69 yards on Gettysburg's final drive, which culminated in a 10-yard TD strike to junior receiver
Alec Pacelli (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) with 41 ticks showing. Miller's two-point conversion pass was incomplete, and an onside-kick attempt by the Bullets was recovered by Hopkins.
Kornegay finished with a career-high 13 tackles while senior linebacker
Cody DiAmore (Haddon Heights, N.J./Bishop Eustace) added 12 hits. Hani Annnabi made 11 stops for the Blue Jays.
Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action next Saturday, when it visits Moravian College at 1 p.m.
