BALTIMORE – Four different Bullets scored and the Gettysburg College field hockey team used a big 10-minute stretch midway through the first half to pick up a 4-2 Centennial Conference victory at Johns Hopkins University Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (9-6, 4-5 CC) now finds itself in seventh place in the conference standings with only one game remaining on its schedule. The Bullets are just one game out of the fifth and final playoff spot; the top-five teams quality for the conference tournament.
All six of the game's goals were scored in the first half.
Senior
Ashleigh Guise (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) gave the Bullets a 1-0 lead 2:46 into the game when she converted a dish from freshman
Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) with a shot from the middle of the circle.
The Blue Jays (7-9, 5-5 CC) went in front in front with the next two goals, as Alexa Lantiere scored her 13th goal of the season before Elena Gresick made it 2-1 on a penalty stroke with 21:55 left in the half.
Gettysburg answered with three goals – all of which came off deflections – in less than 10 minutes. Senior
Kelly Spieker (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) tied it up at 2-2, redirecting a shot from classmate
Erica Barbuto (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) with 19:22 left. Seven minutes later, junior
Kellyann Walley (Northport, N.Y./Northport) gave the Bullets a lead they would not relinquish, scoring off a hard-hit ball by senior
Liz Baron (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge), who registered her 10th assist of the year.
Junior
Kristen Olenick (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) provided an insurance goal for the Bullets, deflecting a long hit by Fitzgerald with 9:52 remaining in the half.
The Bullets outshot the Blue Jays 11-4 in the first half, but Hopkins held a 10-9 edge in the second stanza. However, each goalie made four saves over the final 35 minutes.
Senior
Alexis Bralow (Philadephia, Pa./Harriton) finished with five saves for Gettysburg while Zoey Atabek stopped eight shots for the Blue Jays.
Gettysburg plays its regular-season finale next Saturday, when it hosts Dickinson College at 1 p.m.
