Alyssa Isler (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) scored 14 points and classmate
Caroline Murphy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) added 13 points to lead Gettysburg College past visiting Dickinson College 55-43 in Centennial Conference women's basketball action Tuesday night inside Bream Gym.
Gettysburg (4-1, 2-1 CC) overcame a 44-31 disadvantage on the boards by holding Dickinson (1-4, 0-3 CC) to just 27.3 percent shooting from the field. Isler finished 5-of-7 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc en route to a season high scoring effort. Murphy added eight rebounds, three assists, and three blocked shots, while senior
Rianna Doane (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) keyed the defense with five steals to go with nine points.
Sam Kennedy led Dickinson with 10 points, while Erica Buls added seven points and 11 boards.
Gettysburg was in the driver's seat for most of the game, but the scrappy Red Devils would not go away. A three-pointer by
Katie Earley (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) pushed the lead to nine (21-12) with 8:41 left in the first half before Dickinson rallied with a 13-4 run to tie things up at 25 with just over a minute remaining. Following an old-fashioned three-point play by sophomore
Emily Duggan (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City), Sarah Phillips knocked down a jumper to set the score at 28-27 in favor of Gettysburg heading into the break.
The Bullets' defense locked down Dickinson in the second half as the visitors canned just 5-of-25 field goal attempts (20 percent). With the defense holding strong, the hosts steadily increased the advantage with a putback by junior
Danielle Bernini (Kulpmont, Pa./Mt. Carmel) setting the score at 43-29 with 9:49 left to play.
The Red Devils mounted one last rally, slicing the deficit to just six (45-39) on a lay-up by Philips with 4:57 remaining. Duggan put an end to the run with another three-point play following a nice feed from Doane to push the lead back to nine (48-39) with 4:39 on the clock. Dickinson would not score another field goal inside the final four minutes of play.
Gettysburg finished 19-of-48 from the floor (39.6 percent), including hitting 6-of-12 shots from distance. The Bullets picked up 17 points as the result of 17 turnovers by Dickinson.
Duggan tallied six points, five rebounds, four assists, and a pair of steals for the hosts. Sophomore
Jessica Porter (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) added four points and seven rebounds.
