GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall College swept doubles play to help secure a 6-3 win over Gettysburg College in Centennial Conference women's tennis action on Wednesday.
Franklin & Marshall (6-7, 3-4 CC) won the first five matches against Gettysburg (8-5, 3-4 CC). Anya Sahaydachny and Megan FitzMaurice defeated sophomore
Isabelle Rodriguez (Plano, Texas/Plano) and senior
Laura Habecker (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School) at the top doubles flight 8-4.
The Diplomats clinched the match with wins at fifth and sixth singles before Gettysburg closed with wins in three of the final four matches. Habecker swept past Dana Sleeper 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4. Rodriguez also won in straight-sets at the second flight, taking down FitzMaurice 6-2, 6-4.
The match concluded with a battle at the No. 1 position between sophomore
Caroline Haymans (Great Falls, Va./Oakcrest) and Sahaydachny. After the Diplomat won the opening set 7-5, Haymans took advantage of some unforced errors to earn a 6-2 win in the second frame. Sahaydachy led 6-4 in the super-tiebreaker before the Bullet sophomore rebounded for the next four points to take the lead for good. Haymans clinched the win as Sahaydachy missed back-to-back serves.
Gettysburg returns to action against Washington College on Saturday, April 20, at noon.
