GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg's net defense proved insurmountable in its Centennial Conference volleyball opener against Ursinus College as the Bullets recorded 15 blocks in a three-set victory inside Bream Gym on Saturday.

Gettysburg (6-5) took down Ursinus (4-5) with scores of 25-17, 25-18, and 26-24. The momentum didn't hold in the Bullets' second contest of the afternoon as St. Mary's (Md.) College (7-1) overcame an opening-set loss to win in four sets (21-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-14).

Gettysburg's front-court defense was at its peak so far this season, particularly in set two when the Bullets posted nine blocks. The team total was the highest since a 26-block performance against Elizabethtown College on Sept. 25, 2010.

Despite the wall of defense, Ursinus jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the third frame and led by as many as eight (14-6) in the set. The Bullets persevered and tied the contest at 22-all thanks to a trio of kills by sophomore Joosje Grevers (Westport, Conn./Staples) and an attack error by Ursinus. Three errors by the visitors helped seal the two-point win for the Bullets.

Senior Sarah Gorski (Darien, Conn./Darien) had a hand in 10 blocks with one solo effort and nine assists. She added eight kills. Grevers and freshman Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albermarle) each turned in nine kills with the first-year adding 15 digs and five blocks.

Senior Lizzy Kuhn (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) logged 28 assists, 10 digs, and five block assists, while senior Kelly Milione (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) finished with 11 digs.

Karla Thiele led Ursinus with 12 kills and Leah Masiello put up 22 digs.

Four players reached double-figure kills to lead St. Mary's past Gettysburg. Autumn Fisher led the Seahawks with 14 kills, while Mandy Goodspeed and Mimi Graf each turned in 11 kills.

Bergin polished off a productive day with a season-best 13 kills and 11 digs. Gorski tallied eight kills and five blocks, while Kuhn added 29 assists and four aces. Milione led the defensive effort with 17 digs.

Gettysburg returns to action at Messiah College on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m.
