Box Score
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Washington College scored the game-winning goal with 9:26 remaining and the host Shorewomen prevailed 4-3 over Gettysburg in a back-and-forth Centennial Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon.
Washington (2-4, 1-1 CC) never trailed after scoring the game's opening goal 2:22 into the contest. The Bullets would pull even on three occasions, however, until Jackie O'Connell scored what held up as the game-winner for the Shorewomen.
Senior Liz Baron (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) scored two goals to lead Gettysburg (3-3, 0-2 CC), which dropped its third straight game. Freshman Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) added a goal and an assist for the Bullets while senior Alexis Bralow (Philadelphia, Pa./Harriton) made eight saves.
O'Connell finished with two goals for Washington while Claire McAuliffe added a goal and an assist. Stephanie Harryman turned aside 10 shots for the Shorewomen.
After McAuliffe scored the game's opening goal for Washington, Baron tied it up with 13:06 remaining in the half for the Bullets, with sophomore Amanda Schlager (Mountville, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) providing the assist. But O'Connell put Washington up 2-1 a minute in a half later to give her team a one-goal lead at the intermission.
Baron struck again just 46 seconds into the second half, this time off a Fitzgerald dish. Kate Duggan scored with 15:58 remaining to give the hosts a 3-2 advantage before Fitzgerald pulled the Bullets even for the third time, scoring off a feed from senior Erica Barbuto (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) with 13:00 showing.
Harryman came up big down the stretch for Washington, making four of her saves in the final 12 minutes. With the Shorewomen leading 4-3, she stopped back-to-back shots nine seconds apart with two and a half minutes to go. The Bullets would attempt one final shot with less than two minutes left, but it sailed wide and Washington would maintain possession the rest of the way.
Gettysburg outshot the Shorewomen 20-18 and held a 13-12 edge in corners.
The Bullets return to action next Saturday, when they host Haverford College at 4:30 p.m. during Homecoming.
